Muir Woods without a Car during the Week?

Hi All-

We are getting ready to depart for San Francisco and I had a quick question. Is there anyway to get to Muir Woods via public transportation on a weekday?? We wanted to head down there on Wednesday during the day, but haven't found any options other than renting a car or taking a tour bus there. The shuttles seem to only run on the weekends.

Thanks for any advice!

You will have to change buses, so I'd advise getting started as early as possible.

Hope this schedule helps. This page also has the bus lines that run from San Francisco to Marin County. You will have to catch the SF bus first, the transfer to the Marin County bus.

We took the Grayline tour to Muir and with AAA discount it was reasonable....

There is a man who runs really small groups on guided hikes of Muir Woods at a really reasonable cost. I went on a hike with him last year, but I cannot remember his name, but I found his brochure at the San Francisco Visitor's Center over in Union Square - you could probably call the Visitor's Center and ask for the phone number.

It was a great tour - he picks you up at your hotel in his mini van (so max of 7 people on any tour - we had just 4), drives over Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods and the hike is about 2 1/2 hours plus a 30 minute break for lunch (he provides sandwiches and drinks). It only cost $50 per person last year. He will drive you back to San Francisco, or if you want, he will drop you off in Sausalito afterwards so you can explore on your own and take the ferry back. He works part time for Muir Woods, so he is really knowledgeable about the trails and the flora/fauna.

If you have any mobility issues, this isn't the tour for you. The majority of the hike is off the path and on lots of uneven trail - uphill, downhill, rocky...

We stayed in SF and rented a car a block away in the middle of downtown for just a day $64, 4yrs ago. That way we could go over the Golden Gate Bridge, go to Muir Woods, Sausalito, and drive down Lombard St 2x. After you go down Lombard once have a passenger get out and drive the car around again then the person that got out can take pictures of you going down the most crooked st.
