Muir Woods – visiting the easy way :)

I was surprised how easy it was to get there – Golden Gate transit bus picked us up on Van Ness, at Marin City we just walked over to a shuttle waiting, got to the entrance. The cars were parked 3 miles out along the road – the parking situation is insane. Most of the park shuttles run to/from Marin, some of them to Sausalito Ferry – very few, going back from the park we saw people standing there, the shuttle to Sausalito was too full.

The ride is winding in the mountains, so if any motion sickness issues, take medications. If you have a National Parks pass, get a free entrance at the cashier’s. There is a café and a gift shop – café has sandwiches, hot dogs, soups, good veggie and berry salads, all kinds of drinks. Free water refill for your bottle on the right side inside the café.

In the park there is a smaller loop partially boardwalk, partially old pavement, uneven, with lots of benches along, the map is $1. Easy to choose a trail for your strength, or the lack of it :) Pick a day with dry weather – we went once after a strong rain, and the park looked too wet to enjoy. This time it was so much better!

The trees in Muir Woods are redwoods. There is some confusion about redwoods and sequoias – they are closely related. The redwoods are sequoia sempervirens, the scientific name for sequoias is sequoia dendron giganteum. Redwoods are slimmer and taller, sequoias are wider and a little shorter, those are in Yosemite.

That's great info FA. I'd never quite figured out the logistics of getting there by public transport -- and you're right, the parking situation is usually a zoo.

Looks like you had a wonderful day for it.

Thanks for the report & pix. I was surprised to hear about the traffic and trouble parking. I've never had a bit of trouble ... Then I realized I've never gone during the summer ;-)

I also love nearby Muir Beach. There's something magical about that area.
