Muir Woods Tours San Francisco

We would like to visit Muir Woods during our stay in SF 1 April-4th April. We do not want to hire a car,and the tours I have looked at combine a trip to Sausalito and or a trip to Alcatraz. We would prefer to do Sausalito and Alcatraz on our own and not with a tour. However there is another tour advertised starting 1 April (The day we arrive) combining Muir Woods with a ferry trip to Tiburon and then on to Marin Headlands. It is a 5 hour tour costing $ 60.00. Does this sound a worthwhile tour? Any other recommendations appreciated.

I believe you can visit Muir Woods and the Headlands in five hours. I love Muir Woods, and recommend that you should visit. I am sure you are aware that you could rent a car for $60. Muir is an easy 30 minute drive from downtown SFO.

You don't really need a guide for the Woods or the headlands, but your tour package is an acceptable alternative to renting a car.

Just a note of caution in case you or anyone traveling w/you gets motion sickness. On the bus tour to Muir Woods, I got really ill from the very curvy roads. If I ever went again, I would go in a car where I could ride up front and stop along the way if necessary. Unfortuately the day we went I spent most of the time there trying to recuperate, as opposed to enjoying the beautiful trees.

I would vote for renting a car. That gives you more options, You would have time to visit Tiburon, Sausalito and walk on the Golden Gate Bridge. And have time left over to cruise around the city.

A 5 hour tour sounds very rushed to me to see Muir Woods.

"we" is how many? even if 2, $60 x 2 = $120, how much is it to rent a car for one day, go to Muir Woods for a couple of hours and then on to wine country, if desired. Or back to the city to Golden Gate park.

Muir Woods, once you enter, is not exactly a wild place. There is a wooden walkway, and everyone is asked to stay on, so you don't need a tour guide.

I agree $ 120.00 for 2 people seems a lot but neither my husband and I are confident about driving in the United States. We hate driving in Wellington or Auckland, as you can probably tell we live in the small city of Nelson New Zealand where the main motorway consists of three lanes at the most. We just don't want to put ourselves through the stress but still want to enjoy some of the sights around San Francisco so tours seem the best option.

If you're at all nervous about driving, then a tour such as you've described is probably the best bet. The ferry to Tiburon is quite scenic.

I'm assuming that you would take the ferry to Tiburon Landing, board a bus there, be driven to Muir Woods, wander about for a bit, and then be driven back into San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge. That's a nice way to go.
