I will be coming from Yosemite and want to see Muir Woods. Where is the best place to stay near Muir Woods?

There aren't many places - where are you going next?

Most people probably stay in San Francisco. If camping, perhaps camp at Pt. Reyes.

Pt Reyes only has walk-in campsites.

What time of year?

Yes -- definitely stay in SF.

But - another option is to skip Muir Woods this trip. I'm assuming from your screen name you have relocated to California. If so, you will be taking other trips around California and there are much better redwood parks w/ more/larger trees. Instead of trying to squeeze Muir Woods into your already busy itinerary, I'd save redwoods for when you can take some time farther up north.

Was posting the same time as tom. Point Reyes Hostel is almost an hour from Muir Woods and then another nearly 90 minutes to San Francisco. Staying in SF makes much more sense -- IF one wants to visit Muir Woods enroute to SF.

I'm with Janis. Skip Muir Woods and spend more time in Yosemite. I like the trees best in Sequoia NP and 2nd would be the Redwoods in Far North-Redwood National Park-specifically Prairie Creek(James Irvine Trail right behind the visitor center all the way to the ocean via fern canyon). Stout Grove area is nice and the drive there is really good.

Maripossa Grove in Yosemite has some really nice trees though, do spend at least a half day there, IMOP. Grizzly Giant is nice, but I liked Tunnel Tree and Clothespin tree the best there.

Coming from Yosemite, I think Muir Woods will be underwhelming. It is more of a rain forest type setting though. Lots of mossy.

Yes we have just moved to CA . My DH wants to go to Muir Woods even though I was told on this forum not to visit. So I guess we will just go straight to San Fran after Muir Woods

There's a youth hostel in the Marin Headlands.

Muir Woods is out of the way unless you are coming from the north or Napa Valley or perhaps the northern coast (Stinson Beach, Bolinas, Point Reyes). It is usually visited as an afternoon trip from San Francisco. Or it can be combined with a drive to the top of Mt. Tam.

I liked Muir Woods and as Michael suggested, combine it with a drive up to the top of Mt. Tam, if it is clear you will have fabulous 360 degree views on the walk around the peak.

I would go to Muir again and I did enjoy it. However, there are more thing in other areas that I liked better. I even like Point Reyes better, which is just a bit north of Muir Woods. Anyway, since you live there now, enjoy all of it as much as you can and I'm sure you will be back to a few places from time to time.

I like Muir Woods very much. It's a completely different experience from Yosemite,

But I LOVE Muir Beach--just down the road, Magical. Don't miss it.

The OP is visiting Muir Woods on the same day they drive from Yosemite to San Francisco . . .
