Moving within NYC
 

I have a daughter who will be moving from the UWS to Inwood. No furniture, but it would probably take 2 taxi-rides-full, if they would allow it. She has friends to help, but none with a car . . . any other suggestions? And any idea what a taxi would cost her from the 70's to Inwood; best route? Thanks!

1)Try a car service rather than a cab, and she could get a minivan so she wouldn't need 2 trips
Two well known ones are Carmel and Dial 7
2)I always see these small rental vans around town (U-Haul?) that say they cost $19.95 per day plus mileage for in-city use only.
UWS to Inwood is about 6-8 miles, so mileage shouldnt be that expensive

Two Men and a Truck? I think you pay them by the hour. Keep in mind that you usually underestimate how much stuff you have.

Have her look at the bulletin board at the local supermarket. There shold be signs for a guy - or two with a truck (really a van). Taxis will be very expensive because they'll charge waiting time while you load and unload everything - and you do always have much more than you think.

And I presume she wouldn't just want to dump her stuff on the sidewalk - but bring it actually into the new apartment.

And even if she has no furniture doesn;t she have appliances, kitchen stuff etc besides her clothes?

She should either hire a mover who will bring her stuff up and down or rent a uhaul or maybe even a rental car (minivan) (is she 21?)

I agree with NYTraveler -- keep in mind the logistics of doing this yourself. You will need at least one person to watch the truck or watch the stuff while someone else stages it and/or carries it in and out of the buildings. Better to just hire a low-cost mover for an hour or two.

Agreed. My husband and I moved into our apartment in October, and with just the two of us, it was a nightmare with all of the back-and-forth. Besides, once you pay a taxi to go all the way up and back (twice) and wait on you to move, you can probably just afford a cheap moving service.

Where in Inwood is she moving to? And tell her welcome to the neighborhood. There is so much building and rennovation happening in this area of the city, it's wonderful to see all the old brownstones brought back to their old glory.

I agree with craigslist.com to find a mover. We found a great guy with a van for $20 an hour and he was so helpful when we moved in October.

I would not recommend doing a taxi for the move, since alot of the time, the trunks are either dirty or not very big or not full.

Service cars are also not a good idea and they will be more expensive.

Get a mover with a van, it will make it so much easier for her.
