moving to SC
 

Hi, We want to move to SC Coast. Moderate home rental, serene, quiet, natural, uncrowded, etc. Any help? Thanx.

The moderate home rental requirement is going to make this difficult. But assuming you are okay with not actually being on the beach, it's probably possible.

Also, not sure what you mean by uncrowded. Looking for a small city, no city? Job important?

Give us a little more to go on.

Moderate will get you about 15 miles from the coast.

What is your price range?

Serene, quiet, natural, and uncrowded at the beach costs millions. Literally.

When you say "coast", do you mean as near the ocean? There are area with salt marshes with access to salt water rivers that provide the "serene, quiet, natural, uncrowded" areas that you might like. But, while that's what we might call coastal, it may not be what you want.

Aileen, Thanks for your posting. Yes, that salt water thing sounds good. Any suggestions? What areas of SC coast are less expensive than others? Thanx.

You've got to give us more to go on. But absent that, of the areas I am somewhat familiar with, I'd check into:

Georgetown, SC
Pawleys Island, SC
Calabash, NC
Ocean Isle, NC
Sunset Beach, NC
Southport, NC

Chuck, have you noticed prices for Pawleys lately? Not sure that 'less expensive' (the OP's words)is a phrase I'd ever use in the same sentence with 'Pawleys Island'. LOL!

sjvagott, what is your idea of 'less expensive'? $500,000? $750,000? 1M?

You can still buy a condo on the ocean for $250,000 just about anywhere in the state.

There are no places in the state that you can buy a waterfront home for under $1M. In some places such as Sullivan's Island or Pawleys Island, $1M will not get you within three blocks of the beach.

he's looking to rent, not buy. And I thought, maybe, just maybe, he might be able to find a lease somewhere on the mainland that was reasonable.

However, that may be wishful thinking, as I know prices have shot up at PI as they have everywhere else around here.

Your post made me think, though, even the chance of a decent rental rate almost certainly means you're not actually on/adjacent to a body of water of any kind.

Okay, I see now.

Yearly rentals are easiest to find in the fall.

To find an annual rental, drive around in the area you want to live in. The good rentals are never advertised in the paper.

I just realized I didn't respond to your email question about healthcare. Somewhat surpisingly, there is decent healthcare on the SC coast.

Grand Strand Regional Medical Center (in MB) has a good cardiac care uit, and Charleston (about 2 hours south of MB) has outstanding care at MUSC (Medical University of South Carolina).

But stay healthy; breathe that salt air!
