Moving from philly suburbs to St. Petersburg Florida area

My husband and I Are thinking about moving to Saint petersburg Florida. We want a somewhat hip area with decent schools for our 2 kids. My husband works from home so we can really live anywhere. He and I want to be 15 mins from the beach by car or closer. Any advice for us during this discovery process would be great. I’m also confused about the schools. Can you run a real estate search for specific schools? In Pa you buy a house and know exactly what school district it is. I hear in CL there is a new rule that you can go to any school as long as you provide transportation.

You can do the particular school search using realtor.com

I assume you have already researched the Florida property tax and hazard/wind insurance situations.

Dear heavens. I really hope you are not going to rely on a travel board to give you information about moving. And about school systems and rules and areas.
Have you been to this area and stayed for a while?
I see the beach is important. Hope there are good schools nearby.

Move to Charleston or Charlotte, right?

You should post your question on this relocation forum:

No Dukey, but I think some better research would serve her better and especially when it comes to kids and schools.

I DO recommend Charleston as a vacation destination a lot--it's a charmer.
I don't know that I have recommended Charlotte all that much although we love it and it is a great city with much to recommend it. But it is MUCH further than a couple of blocks from the beach, and you DO have to send your kids to the school district you live in for public school. That will probably rule it out for the OP.

It's not quite that simple. You are assigned a neighborhood school. YOu can "request" a change to another one, but it isn't guaranteed, it depends if there are any openings. If a neighborhood had a superior school, I imagine it would be full with the kids who lived there and there would not be many special request openings available. And students are given priority if they are military, or students who were relocated due to divorce or foster care. So after all that, try to find out from locals what the probability really is that you can just go wherever you want.

Our friends lived in Arizona for 30 years and hated that it took 45 minutes to get to any store. Now they live in St Petersburg, FL and they are a few miles from everything, but it takes 45 minutes to get there due to multiple lights and traffic congestion.

Actually, St. Pete has a large walkable downtown area, complete with grocery stores, restaurants, breweries, music venues, museums, waterfront parks and, soon, a new pier.
