Moving from NewYork to Pittsburgh
Hello to all I am hoping that maybe I will be able to get some really good insight into the city Of Pittsburgh & I think what better than to hear from the people who live there
I am a single Mom with a 7 year old daughter she will be entering the 3rd grade in the fall I am waiting until school is over to move which would be end of June I will be transferring Jobs and will be in downtown Pittsburgh Now my ex will be on Naval base over there as well in Versailles I think the most important thing right now would be the schools over there its seems from what I have seen online an apt will run from $800$1,000 which is not bad only need two bedroom and looking to just rent right now are there any suggestions on an area with good schools and rentals in this area near base as well and Downtown I am willing to drive a little as well if need be
Thanks in advance for all your suggestions

It's about 20 miles from Versailles to downtown Pittsburgh. I'm sorry to say that I don't think much of any of school districts along the way.
I suppose you are talking about the Naval Reserve Base in North Vesailles/East McKeesport. This is a rather run down former industrial area. Me, I would never want to live anywhere near there.
My daughter tells me that Jefferson Hills is a good school district, and so is Baldwin. Baldwin would be a nice area to live in, kind of half way between the base and downtown.
Try looking at Baldwin, Whitehall, Brentwood.
I'm not sure about rents being quite that low. If you are coming from New York, you are used to much higher rents, but I don't think a nice two bedroom in a good school district will go for 800 per month. I might be wrong.
Driving to downtown is a problem. Parking is expensive, although not as expensive as NY. There are park and ride bus lots but that can be hard when you have a child at home and rely on a bus.
If you like city living, the City of Pittsburgh schools in Squirrel Hill are a cut above many city schools here, and there are tons of apartments and good public transportation to downtown. There are certain short cuts to the North Versailles area.

Thank you for the Info It was helpful and On point I was able to visit the area this weekend and look around you are correct about the rents they are slightly higher but its still nothing compare to New York I am thinking the Monroeville area which seemed ok and had everything close by as far as stores, Hospital and schools
I was able to get to the Downtown area right in the Middle of rush Hour and it looked like New York Gridlock was very surprised I did look at Baldwin and Whitehall but will need to do a little more research
Thanks for all your Help

Thank you for your feedback and I did look in the two area's that you spoke about I was not able to find much in Murrysville But Monroeville did have lots more rentals and close to Highway
I was wondering we stood in a hotel off of McKnight RD how is that area next to the Mall that is there (ross park I think its called ) It seemed ok and lots of shops but I was told it can be Congested at times ?
Many thanks

If you are planning to drive to downtown I would reconsider the Monroeville area. My coworkers who live in that area and drive in have horrible commutes. The ones who are able to take the bus do a little better because of the busway.

I kind of figured it would be bad driving from Downtown but I have no choice that is where I will be working It seems that I will hit traffic which ever way I go unless I live downtown and I really don't want to do that
Thanks for your help Blackandgold

ELLE: the area out by Ross Park Mall is not more congested than the route from Monroeville to downtown, but it is in the opposite direction from the Versailles area. Nevertheless, prices are good and so are schools.
For proximity to the Versailles area, I think you ought to do a little more research in to the Baldwin/Whitehall area. A little closer to downtown, perhaps the possibility of the T line (public transport) via a park and ride lot. But definitely a decent way to get the Versailles area from there.
Good luck. I'm following your thread.
