Moving from Maine to Oahu
Hello,
I got some great information in another post about many of the things I will need to take care of in order to move to Oahu. What I'm particularly needing now are places to contact to find housing. Are there some places to look other than the typical ones on the net? Housing is tight in Hawaii, is there anything I can do to get a better deal? We are a family with three children ages 10, 6, and 18 months. I am a special education teacher and my husband is a drug and alcohol counselor. We are working to lineup jobs now, but are also needing to look into housing. Any and all tips would be appreciated. Tammy |

I don't know if the Dept. of Education has any cottages on Oahu, but a friend of mine who is a teacher lived in a teacher's cottage on Maui for a couple of years. Apparently, the DOE subsidizes cottages in rural areas to attract teachers there. If you are willing to teach in a rural area you might check with the DOE.
As a side note, my teacher friend said the cottage had cane spiders (large and ugly, but not dangerous) and he insisted the cottage was haunted. On the plus side, he paid about $500 a month for a 2-bedroom house. |
Jolie,
Thanks! Great tip! And yes...those cane spiders are not something you want to crawl into bed with...yikes! Mahalo! Tammy |
