Moving down south from Pennsylvania
 

Me and my boyfriend are considering moving to Georgia or Florida for various reasons. I want to go back to school for my masters or start working in a marine biology field because pa is very limited to this. My boyfriend is a contractor with his own business and wants to be able to work year round. I obviously want to visit both states to see what options there are before jumping the gun and moving. Anyone know of good areas to visit that would be a good fit for us??? Any advice would be tremendously appreciated! We feel a little lost :/

I know you say GA or FL, but UNC Wilmington has a marine biology program. Do research on key cities online then visit a couple different places for a weekend or longer before making the big decision.

In regard to Florida a lot (expense-wise) depends on whether you plan to rent or purchase a residence.

Besides you looking at specific school opportunities your BF needs to look into the contracting business. In some places quite busy - in other places very slow - despite good weather.

When speaking, "my boyfriend and I" is more correct. OMG, I Hate "me and him"==and my very well educated son does it. Rant over.
Wilmington would be a GREAT fit--maybe for both, and for cost of living.

Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne has a good program for marine biology. The cost of living is reasonable because you're away from the barrier island and typically higher priced real estate. Can't comment on the opportunities for a contracting business, but I think the building industry is picking up a bit in FL. Have no statistics on that, just anecdotal stuff.

Presumably, too, you'll meet people in FL who will answer your questions directly and realize it's rude to correct another's grammar.

Frankly (being an x-English teacher), correcting grammar is helpful and makes one a better communicator.

That being said, I joined this forum to get input on my potential investment for a home/condo in FL. I have done much research in the Tampa, Jacksonville, Ft Myers area and recently W. Palm Beach. Was originally looking at condos, but I realize there are drawbacks when it comes to noise, HOA's, etc. However, I want low maintenance on my part as I will spend most of my time there without outdoor and repair help.

Started looking at Gulf side, but may be now leaning away from it due to hurricanes....nothing has been set in stone yet

If you live in any of the above areas, please give pros and cons on condos v homes; any other information you can provide greatly appreciated...maybe patio homes? Looking for newer constructed as I do not need prior owner problems left behind, and the home will be used as a winter getaway vacation for family members. We love beach and water sports must be walking distance from beach/es. Thanks
