Movies to put you in the mood for a western road trip

Hello

As some of you may have seen, I am heading out west soon.

I will be visiting the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Zion and Bryce National Parks (UT), maybe Moab and Arches NP but probably not... Death Valley, Yosemite, and then ending in San Francisco for the last four or so nights.

I know I've seen MV in at least a few movies, not the least of which was Forrest Gump.

Any other eye candy movies I should check out before I leave?

Thank you

Three John Ford classics for sure - Stagecoach, The Searchers, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon; Ford was very fond of filming in/around Monument Valley.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed in southern Utah, including Zion NP, and don't forget - but don't emulate - Thelma and Louise.

A lot of iconic western movies (including some of my faves like Silverado</i were filmed farther north; lots were shot around Grand Teton NP for the mountain scenery, and others like Dances with Wolves were filmed in Montana and South Dakota.

I'd definitely put together a music playlist for the car. If it's a new car it'll probably have a USB slot or a Bluetooth connection. The list of evocative songs is really long; don't get me started.

If you read, look for any of the mysteries about the Navajo Police by Tony Hillerman.

Oh! Sorry for not coming back!

Thank you for the ideas. And I'd love playlist ideas. Although I suspect I could listen to the Forrest Gump soundtrack!

Blood Meridian . . . oh wait, that's not a movie yet because it's basically unfilmable. Too bad. The book is a monster.

No Country for Old Men isn't a Western and doesn't take place in the Four Corners or Cali. It's all in Texas at or near the Mexican border.

True Grit (the remake) is a great Western, but its action is far east of your destination.

Now, if you want book recs . . .

P.S. -- Gardyloo, do you listen to anything recorded in stereo? ;-)

You may NOT want to watch 127 Hours. Or at least not if you are going canyoneering alone...

Zabriskie Point for Death Valley.

How about the song " If you're going to San Francisco". A flower power classic.

Gardyloo: "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed in southern Utah"
The actual location was at the ghost town of Grafton located across the river in Rockville. That is where the bicycle scene was filmed.
http://www.tcm.com/mediaroom/video/2...aindrops-.html

Outlaw Josi Wales was filmed in the ghost town of Paria or Pahrea (your choice) east of Kanab, Utah. Kanab Utah is famous for many western movies:

Thelma and Louise
They drove off a cliff at Fossil Point in their Thunderbird convertible car. It is on San Juan County Road 142 (Potash Road or Shafer Trail)near Moab, Ut.
