Mountains in Washington & Oregon

We're planning a 3-week trip to WA & OR area very soon. We enjoy hiking and would like a few suggested mountain areas to visit. We're a newly retired group (60 + under), not familiar with the NW. Does Alison Stern have comments for us?

We are also stopping at Glacier National Park on the way.

There are many trails to choose from in Washington and Oregon ranging from easy walks to highly technical mountain climbs.

A good source for trail information is the "100 Hikes in..." series published by the Moutaineers (a local mountaineering organization). For current trail information in Washington, the Washington Trail Association has an excellent web page. It is at

One thing to keep in mind is that the Cascades recieved a ton of snow this year. There are many trails at higher elevations that are still snowed in. Yearly maintainance of some trails has also been delayed by the late snow melt. I would strongly recommend contacting the ranger district in the area you are hiking in to check on the trail conditions before you go.

Enjoy your trip!

I fell in love with Stehekin, WA, which is at the
north end of Lake Chelan. It's so remote, the
only ways you can get there are by float plane or
boat. There's great hiking up McGregor Mountain,
a good restaurant at the boat dock, a great place
to stay at Stehekin Log Cabin (warning: no credit
cards!), and wonderful cinnamon rolls next door at
the bakery.
