Mountaineer Gaming Resort
 

Anyone been to the Mountaineer Gaming Resort, near Wheeling? We're thinking about a weekend trip, but want to get some opinions and advise re: where to stay (outside of the resort itself), where to eat, things to do (besides gambling), etc.

other than golf a few miles away there is really nothing beside gamble and playing the horses...and not too much around tostay or eat..Pitssburgh is about 30 miles away....there is a hotel there..

Nice tips, but would like to know if anyone has ACTUALLY stayed there or BEEN there - would like their comments on what they thought of this place, not just what someone "thinks" it is like. Thanks.

Linda - been there and done it! Mountaineer is actually 1 hour north of Wheeling (at the top of the WVa pnahandle) near the towns of Chester and Newell, West Virgina. It is not convenient to any major interstate. There is absolutely nothing to do there except play slot machines (get there early to avoid the senior citizen rush!), attend a horse race at the Mountaineer track, play slot machines, attend a scheduled event at "The Harv" concert auditorium, play slot machines, golf at a their nearby golf course, play slot machines, stay at their hotel (which resembles a renovated old Holiday Inn), play slot machines, visit the Fiesta Ware pottery outlet in Newell, and play slot machines. Did I mention you could play slot machines at Mountaineer? Slot machines are the big draw to Mountaineer Gaming Resort....and that's about it! There are no other hotels nearby. For a better time in West Virginia, try Wheeling Downs in Wheeling, WVa. It is more convenient being situated along I-70. Wheeling has a numerous selection of hotels (the usual chains) as opposed to Mountaineer's single hotel. There are slot machines at Wheeling Downs also and a dog race track, but Wheeling also offers the beautiful Oglebay Park. Oglebay is a complete resort in itself with golfing, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, and its own lodge or cabins. I recommend a weekend in Wheeling over Mountaineer....besides, I have better luck at the slots and dog races in Wheeling than I have at Mountaineer!
