This is the route I would take -
Head to Front Royal VA and ride the Skyline Drive. (about 400 miles. Don't have a route to recommend). Head down through the mountains via the Blue Ridge Parkway to Valle Crucis, NC. (about 330 miles) Head on down to ride the Tail of the Dragon. http://www.travelchannel.com/shows/a...-of-the-dragon Cautious: It's dangerous! Spend the night in Franklin NC or Clayton GA. Head south on 441 through Athens and Madison GA 83 through Shady Dale to 80 to Columbus GA Head south on 431 through Eufala to Panama City Beach. Stay somewhere along 30a, along the coast of the Gulf's sugar sand beaches or along 98, anywhere this side of Pensacola Beach Go to New Orleans Drive 90 to Lafayette Head toward Texas. Stop in San Antonio or Austin Head west I'd get out an old fashioned atlas and look for the dotted green lines along scenic roads. Just some ideas. |
Agree big time using a M/C. If you are off-highway serious, don't do the big Harley, but a large off/on road bike in the 900cc range (with faring). If not comy with M/C, consider a 'trike' these are some examples (I stay on 2 wheels personally)
http://www.cycletrader.com/New-or-Us...ybrid?cmp=BING On/Off road M/C. I like these maps tailored for M/C riders http://www.butlermaps.com/ If you can adjust your schedule, ensure you include Sturgis (S. Dakota) M/C rally. It is their 75th anniversary - a really big celebration. Stay at Buffalo Chip campground. No booze allowed within a glass container - metal is ok. Also, alas, I had to check my loaded .44 revolver at the gate just like in Dodge City. http://www.sturgisrally.com/ Vaga |
One idea would be to use mapquest.com and put in the avoid hi ways option.
You could do it in short intervals to give you some options. Another is to get the old book "Blue Highways". |
