Mother-daughter NYC Dec trip - reasonable hotel / B&B?
Hi - I've gone back through so many previous posts about finding budget / cheap / inexpensive accomodations in Manhattan, but I still have questions. My mom and I just decided to go to NYC in mid-Dec as a pre-40th for me. I know we are crazy and frankly, I'd just as soon go in Jan, but my mom is a sucker for window decorations and the Rock tree. So, here we are! I have looked at the Carlton Arms and a few others recommended here, as well as the B&B section on tripadvisor. Do I have a hope at $150? I guess that is the bottom line. Safe and well-lit is important, as is the ability to walk to the midtown area (my mom and I both can do some walking). We do not mind sharing baths and would love international flavor - my au pair stayed at a hostel near the Park with her mom in the Spring, but I cannot find it again for the life of me. We would consider hostels / YMCA's but must have a private room. Thank you, in advance. If I can ever help out with Williamsburg, VA, feel free to post to me

Have you looked at the Washington Square Hotel in Greenwich Village?

We've stayed here several times, always loved it. Shared bath, very simple, very European. Cool place, imho!
I haven't read TripAdvisor reviews on WSH.
I don't know what the rates are now, but it was relatively inexpensive as of 2 years ago. We've also considered the Larchmont Hotel, very nearby, also shared bath situation, and it may be less $$. I love the location, too...

I don't think you'll find both availability AND a $150 price at this point in time for MID Dec. but if your dates are flexible, prices drop pretty dramatically around the 17th of Dec. You should also know the first week in Jan., the decorations are still up (the Rock. Ctr. tree doesn't come down til the 7th-8th).
If you're looking for hostels, hostelz.com is one site that lists them (and reviews them).
There are some women's residences that are quite inexpensive, but they usually require a minimum 3 night or more stay. Not what I'd want for a 40th celebration, but...
