Mother and 16 yr old son 1st trip to Seattle/Oregon

Hi! My son and i are traveling to Seattle and Oregon mid July. Plan is fly to Seattle, the drive to Oregon to mountain bike, white water raft, visit Cannon Beach and Portland. Thinking 7-8 days. Can anyone recommend best places to mountain bike and raft that are not too far of a drive from mt. hood area? Also, if you have any driving itinerary suggestions, I would love to hear them. Plus, places to stay at cannon beach or Astoria? Any other suggestions are welcome as well. Thanks!

Welcome to Fodor's!

Are you planning to spend time in Seattle? Or you are heading to Oregon directly from the airport? For everything you specifically mentioned seems like it would be more efficient to fly into Portland?

Hi and thank you! We are spending the first three days in Seattle! Planning to see sites in the city and see a concert one night.

Hood River/white salmon area for all your rafting needs.

mountain biking is not my thing—but Portland is a huge biking city, so I’d find a reputable mountain bike shop and ask for recs. Someone working at a bike shop has probably hit everything worth hitting in a 60 mile radius.

Rafting is also available just over Mount Hood at Maupin.

White Salmon can have pretty cold water. You can check how it is this year.

If you like adventure, you could also get a windsurfing lesson.

Lodging for the coast may be difficult since it books up far in advance and this is short notice. That said, here are places in Cannon Beach that we have enjoyed over the years. Surfsand Resort( a family favorite since I was a little kid), Schooners Cove, Blue Gull Inn. Most places in CB have 2-3 night minimums in the summer so call directly to see what is available instead of relying on websites.
