Every major hotel/motel chain as well as hundreds of "independents" will have motels all along the Interstates between PA and FL.
Hampton Inns, Days Inn, Embassy Suites, Holiday Inn, Comfort Inns, Clarion, Motel 6, Red Roof Inn, Court Yard by Marriott, etc., etc., etc.
They come in all price ranges and you'll find an abundance of them at just about every exit.

Motels in this area are pretty much the standards. In our limited experience, those with coupons in the books you get at rest areas were not as good as others, though a discount may make it worth it. Remember that you can always ask to see a room and ask for another if you don't like it.
Red flags I have experienced in budget motels: sports fans, college students, wedding parties, large family gatherings where they open the doors to the halls and treat it as a common play area for their kids.
If you are over 55, check for places that specialize in older travelers.

Where are you coming from and where are you going. What route are you following. I can't imagine you would need a motel on that route near Charlotte.
However, if you are coming down 77 to 26, go on to Charleston from Columbia. Charlotte is only about 3+ hours to Charleston.

I stayed at a Candlewood in Columbia when I had to work there. It was very nice, but I don't think it would be considered "budget".It's back off the highway (which is crucial). Budget places will attract many different kinds of people so remember, if it's really cheap, you may not sleep.

Off of I77 in Charlotte at the Billy Graham Parkway exit there are two--one is Embassy Suites--and the other is something else. Oh, and I think there is a Holiday Inn there also.
Columbia is about an hour and a half further. and the "complex" of all the interstates there is daunting, but I'm sure there is anything you need.
I think you could find anything you want as you come along the highway, and stop when you are ready.
Starrs should tell you where those are in Charlotte--I con't recognize them near I77.
Rock Hill is just south of Charlotte and has a lot of motels near the highway, I think.

There are 3 Hilton Garden Inns (a 4th but too far off 77), at least 1 of each of the others near 77 and the Country Inn is near the airport (they could get back on 77 or take 485 back around to 77S)
Use google maps to see exactly where they are each located. Search for "Charlotte NC hotel name".

I don't think anyone is suggesting a one day drive. And St. Augustine is considerably north of Melbourne. I personally like to drive longer the first day and less on the second, but it all depends on circumstances of leaving, and what will be on arrival.
The I77 Billy Graham Parkway exit I mentioned may be the Hilton Garden Inn (one of them).
