Motels in Metairie or Kenner
 

We are planning a trip to New Orleans in November. We prefer to stay a motels due to the fact that my husband is partially disabled and you can park your car right outside your room. So much less walking for him. I see there are several motels listed in Metairie & Kenner but can not find any information on them nor are they listed by AAA. Are there any motels that are cleaner and nicer than others? Most of the ones listed in Metairie are on Airline Hwy. Is this a good area to stay in?

I can't advise on what's available anymore in Metairie and Kenner...it's been way too long since we lived there, but when we did, Airline Hwy was one very grim stretch of road. Ugly. Maybe it has changed and hopefully you'll get more information on that from others.

I am somewhat concerned about your touring the Quarter though in view of your husband's limitations. Will he use a wheelchair? If so, he will be fine getting around, but the Quarter is far from auto friendly so you would not want to rely on your car for seeing anything. Driving in then finding parking is so inconvenient you might be better off staying within the Quarter, leaving your car in hotel parking, and putting up with the longer distance to the room. Just a thought...

I'd also avoid Airline. It's better than it used to be (by far) but still isn't "nice" by any means. Hookers, 4-lane highway, semi-industrial...you get the picture.

I agree with OO that you may want to stay in the heart of the French Quarter IF the Quarter is where you plan to spend the most time. If your trip is going to be primarily driving around town (and the FQ is not driver-friendly!) then a motel may be a good option.

I think Maison St. Charles (a Best Western property) may have exterior doors. It's on St. Charles near Lee Circle. Far preferable to the 'burbs.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Metairie in Jan. My wife is handicapped also,we had a nice clean room and easy access.Drove down to River Walk parked the car and took in the sites.You can also call for a cab. Enjoy

There are larger hotels on Canal St and Poydras St that should accomodate your needs. These are pretty central locations with easy access to most sites. Stay closer to the Riverwalk and you'll be close to the aquarium, the ferry to cross the river is free and fun, Harrah's.
I would hate for your vacation to be stuck in traffic on I-10 getting into New Orleans and then trying to find a parking spot and then end up paying $10+ to park in a lot.

I understand your predicament, geniekim. If you do decide to stay in Metairie/Kenner, you will be fine with any hotel/motel on Veteran's Blvd. Keep in mind that Metairie is closer to downtown N.O. There is a 4 Points by Sheraton at the Veteran's Blvd exit which makes it very convenient to hop right onto the interstate for a quick trip into the city. Right across from it is a La Quinta that is just as convenient. At the Causeway exit is a nice, recently remodeled Holiday Inn. I stay there from time to time when I am traveling alone. The same exit (or maybe one up at Clearview) is a relatively new Sleep Inn.

My husband is handicapped too where walking is concerned, and I can tell you, the Quarter is for walkers, not too handicapped friendly. Lots of times, I drive him up to wherever we are going, let him out, then find a place to park and walk back to where I left him. When we are ready to leave, I go back and get the car and drive back around to pick him up. That has worked well for us.

Thank you so much for all of your advice. We will consider it all. After going thru the 3 recent hurricanes in Orlando, I am not now sure we will still be able to go..however...I have one more question.
Do any of the hotels/motels you all recommended have outside corridors so you can park right outside of your room?

You can park at your room's door at La Quinta at the intersection of I-10 and Veteran's Blvd.

There is a mall at the very end of Canal next to the Aquarium, I think. It has reasonably-priced modern parking that is handicap accessible. This would let you out along the river and near the park and would provide you with access to some of wider areas. And I think you can have your parking fee reimbursed if you shop at the mall. There used to be a coffee shop there which was where I would get my ticket validated.
