Motel Availability in Northern Florida
 

I understand it has very difficult to find a motel room in Florida recentlyu due to the Hurricanes . . either contractors or displaced families filling them up . .

Anyone know if this is still true? . . we may be travelling thru in May and need a room along the I-10 or US 90.

Where are you planning to stop? That makes a big difference. My brother was just working in Pensacola for 3 months & he said many hotels were filled with the out of town workers that have been there helping repair the damaged areas. I have heard that areas like Destin are less hard hit.

Not sure where we would be staying . . we do not structure our vacations . . pretty much follow our noses. Do not usually use the interstates, prefering to meander the back roads and take our time.

I was just wondering because parts of N Florida are ok but the parts closest to the Alabama side got hit really bad. We drove to Jacksonville in December & were surprised to see all the devastation still evident. By the time we got to Graceville (Chipley area) it was pretty much back to normal looking. By May they may have completed enough work for more places to open & hopefully more out of town workers will return home.

We were just in Amelia Island last month & there was little, if any, effect there. There are plenty of places available.

Amelia Island did not take a hit so of course it's fine.

I would think that you could always venture off your country roads to the interstate and find a room. You'll be fine as long as you avoid the Pensacola area. Anything from Ft. Walton east is OK.

While not northern FL, I know that many motel rooms in Vero Beach area are being occupied by displaced families.

Rich--There are lots of motels along US90 in Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi that are open. I think if you are playing it by ear, you can find one. Good luck.

My suggestion is to plan your time so that you do not need a motel room in the AL/Pensacola area, but by all means, stop and have lunch. Many restaurants have reopened. As with many places hard hit by natural disaster, the merchants need tourist dollars, but lodging is tough to come by, especially if you choose to not plan ahead. Hotel/motel/ condo availability is at a premium this year.
