Motel 6
Are the Motel 6 in Los Angeles a good place to stay?
Assuming there are more than one Motel 6 locations(?) in Los Angeles, WHERE specifically it is, is more important than anything about this hotel chain.
We were looking at the Motel 6 Santa Ana (1623 East 1st Street) or the one on San Gabriel Blvd, Rosemead. Or would a Best Western be better? The one on Colorado Blvd... But it's far away from Santa Monica.
I have not stayed at a Motel 6 in years, but I remember them as extremely cheap and very, very basic accommodations. A Best Western is probably nicer and more expensive.
If you want to visit Santa Monica, don't think that you will be saving any money by staying in Santa Ana or in Rosemead. The traffic into the West L.A./Santa Monica area will probably require 3 hours of stressful driving (round trip) and that doesn't even consider the gasoline you will burn. To make a long story short, there is no "cheap" lodging in the Santa Monica area unless you consider a YMCA or something similar. |
Santa Ana is down in Orange County, it's nowhere near Hollywood or the LA beaches you asked about in your other post.
It is interesting to see "Motel 6" and "good place to stay" in the same sentence.
Motel 6 is often, but not always, a less expensive place to stay than other motels in the same area. Unfortunately, that which is "less expensive" is not necessarily a "good value." |
OK, now I don't know what to do anymore... :-) Thanks anyway for your help.
Stephe, you might want to bid on Priceline for a hotel in the area you want to visit. You can often get a good deal on a 3 or 4* hotel that is far better than a Motel 6. Good luck
There's a Motel 6 in Hollywood that's not bad, I'm not sure if they have car parking or not. It's a lot closer to Santa Monica than the others that you mention.
I would suggest you get a map of the greater Los Angeles area, so you can see for yourself the different areas.
As I already said, I'd worry less about the exact motel chain name then it's location. You're asking about places that will literally take you hours on the freeway to get to where you really want to be in the 1st place. I wish I knew a $75/night motel in LA to suggest, but I'm afraid I do not. |
Hi Stephe,
I stayed in a motel 6 ONCE and would not ever do it again even if it was free. Also, the 1st street property in Santa Ana sounds like a tough neighborhood. Also, in either location you mentioned you are far from Hollywood and the beach. Go to tripadvisor.com and look for hotels there as you will get real reviews from real people to help you make a choice. As far as Best Western is concerned the quality can vary a great deal so once again tripadvisor.com is of great value. Also would advise you to get a map of LA. Very LARGE city with serious traffic! |
I used to hate their "homespun" ads. And the guy says "We'll keep the light on for you". HUH? I want it DARK when I sleep!
The LAX hotel options or somewhere in Culver City are both better ideas than staying down in Santa Ana, etc. (see other thread).
The few Motel 6s I've stayed at were perfectly fine. Just don't expect the amenities that a 3-star and up hotel give you. It's called MOTEL 6 for a reason.
The call it Motel 6 because it originally cost $6 a night to stay there, which is the right price.
I guess I should clarify...it's Motel 6, not Hotel 6. :)
I'd use Priceline or Hotwire. You need to do a bit of homework, but you have time to learn how they work.
For example, if I punch in 6/6 to 6/13 on Hotwire, there's a 3.5* hotel in Downtown LA for $79 + fees/taxes a night. Betterbidding.com is down right now, but one can get an educated guess from their database what hotel it may be. But whatever it is, it'll be 10x better than Motel6, though you may have to pay for parking. |
i think i looked at nearly every affordable hotel and motel in LA... or nearly! :-) i'm really tired, now. but i'm still hesitating. at least i still have some time but it's hard selecting a hotel because i don't know which areas are safe or unsafe. what about the rancho park golf course area?
What exact dates are you looking at?
from june 27th till july 3rd...
Is there a particular area you want to visit in Los Angeles? What is your price range?
The Motel 6 on San Gabriel Blvd is next to a freeway. It has been there for quite a few years. It is not close to Santa Monica. If you can give us some details we can try to help you out. |
From your other post, you want to be near Santa Monica and/or Hollywood. I punch in your dates to Hotwire, and limit the results to areas A, B, D, E and H. If you have to stick with under $75, then you can get a 3* for $69 at LAX, which is really not too far from the areas you want to visit.
Based on the amenities listed on Hotwire, and comparing to database on betterbidding.com, that hotel is most likely the Crowne Plaza. One problem is that parking is $12 a day, from that hotel's website and no breakfast. But if you don't mind that cost, you're getting a very decent hotel for the price. Or, there's a 2.5* in Glendale/Burbank/Universal City, which is north of the areas you want to visit, but still okay. Don't know what hotel, but for $79, these class of hotels often include simple breakfast and parking is likely to be free. But since there's no listing on betterbidding.com, you're clearly taking a chance. I am not really saying you should go out and book something like that right now, as Hotwire (or Priceline, which will give you an even better price) do not offer refunds. You pay your money now and that's it. What I'm showing you is that decent hotels can be got for not very large sum of money. Book something that allows cancellation, and then start looking at Hotwire (with help of betterbidding.com), and Priceline (with help of biddingfortravel.com), and see what hotels in what areas come up and then book/bid closer to your travel dates (maybe around April or May). |
The Motel 6 in Santa Ana is not in a particularly safe area in Orange County, I try not to drive in that area!
We have taken many Motel 6 while touring the USA and mostly(especially those in the North and Southwest ) have been alright. When you're touring Motel 6 is fine. You only need a clean room ,it's close to the restaurants. We spend as little time in hotels as possible. We travel to see the country. When we stay several days we usually try Best Western.Paul

I read your other post, so now I know a little more. Have you tried VRBO for a rental instead? I glanced quickly at a few places and found some in your price range or slightly higher. You could have some meals at home, cutting down on the food expense.
http://www.vrbo.com/62400 $650/week http://www.vrbo.com/99298 $87-94 per night http://www.vrbo.com/147238 $525 /week http://www.vrbo.com/158980 $650-850 depending on time of year I didn't look too closely at the particular ares they were in, so check back if you find something that is of interest and someone can give you some feedback on the neighborhood. |
