Umm. . .travlngal. . .I'm not sure where you live, but Seattle actually has a very vibrant downtown after 6 PM. There are restaurants, dance clubs, movie theatres, plays, concerts, and galleries are open. Also, some of the shopping (Nordstrom, Westlake Center, Bon, Pacific Place) are open after 6 PM as well. You may want to check out http://seattleweekly.com or http://stranger.com for current events of the week. The Seattle times also lists events on Friday for the weekend. Areas that are usually "open" include Belltown, Pioneer Square, Capitol Hill, and the Pike/Pine corridor.

Isn't it funny how things go in cycles? 10 years ago everyone was bashing New York and Chicago. On this thread they keep showing up on the underrated list. Congrats to those cites for their comebacks. The 80's darling city however, Seattle has been getting bashed. It's still a great city, but it goes to show when you're the king of the mountain everyone wants to knock you down.

most underrated:
Youngstown Ohio..yes a crumbling deserted town but marvelous parks, museum, architecture and old homes.
Philadelphia PA...no city in america closely resembles London as when you take the Frankford train north from downtown over the old rooftops. Great city for biking too.
Most Overrated:
Washington DC...what a scary place.

Interesting: I was about to nominate Phila. as most under-rated and Atlanta as most over-rated, but I read through prior postings and find a number of people mention one or the other with the same assessment.
Atlantans tend to be almost rabid about the place, but I don't see it at all, unless you're fond of Coca-Cola, air pollution, traffic congestion, and a whiff of sleaze.
Philadelphians, on the other hand, are sometimes known to curse their city for various reasons, but it has more to offer than most people realize -- largely, I suspect, because it's over-shadowed by NYC and Wash. They need to reclaim South Street, of course, and there is real pain in northern sections; but the downtown culture -- museums, restaurants, music, art -- is superb. I love cheesesteak hoagies, but I also love Rodin.

UNCERRATED - Duluth, MN. They have done a lot to the waterfront area to make this a fun city to visit. WE have been back several times and enjoy it each time - even in the winter.
OVERRATED - New Orleans We have been there a number of times and I just can't see the attraction. Yes, we did like some of the food but not much else. Guess we just don't like to drink as much as some or something.

Most overrated:
Miami - was not at all impressed with South Beach and thought as a whole the city was dirty and crime infested
Boston - felt everyone there was either rough and blue collar or the total opposite blue blood. did not like shopping areas and found no quaint downtown area
Underrated:
Washington D.C. - much more to do than just the natioanl monuments, a very cosmopolitan city, with good restaurants, great metro and very good shopping as well
St. Louis - not just a midwestern stopping point. This gateway city is great for any sports fans with football, baseball and hockey having such a heavy following here. Also like the zoo and the downtown area around the river
Memphis - in the past this city has had a bad rep for crime but it has since cleaned up a lot and the Beale street area is great, not to mention some great old homes to tour and some really good barbecue and ribs.

I think this thread is somewhat silly because people's feelings get hurt when their city is listed as "undesirable." It's happened to poor Atlanta on several threads! So, I will give my list of underrated cities and leave off the others.
Underrated -
New Orleans (sorry Cali). Great food, great architecture and a real "city" feel to it.
Washington. Beautiful public grounds and a surprisingly strong nightlife.
Madison. Cold, yes. But also gorgeous with friendly people and a progressive government that most people seem to support!

Cali -
You seem to be getting a lot of grief about your support of Duluth. I've never been there, but for what it's worth, Outside Magazine just listed Duluth in it's Top 10 list of places to live for active/athletic people into outdoor activities.

Underrated:
Fort Worth - like it much better than Dallas.
Chicago - my favorite city in the USA. Love everything about it (except the weather).
Overrated:
New Orleans - unless you explore something else besides Bourbon Street at night.
Houston - aagghhh
