Most scenic train trip
Wifey has been after me for some time to take a train trip and I think she's finally broken me down. We're looking for something scenic, about 4-5 days (more is okay) with sleeper cars. I would prefer US or Canada since we've been abroad twice already this year. Thanks!

Jim, I don't know your departure city, but if it's in the midwest, consider the California Zephyr. Leaves from Chicago, arrives in Emeryville, CA, where you would be bussed to San Francisco. In between are the Rockies and the trip up out of Denver is awesome. Also from Chicago is the Southwest Chief, heading down through Arizona, New Mexico and arriving in LA.
I'm told the California Starlight along the west coast is spectacular. Have also been on Canada's VIA through those Rockies - can't be equaled by any other scenic route. However, it's probably been long booked. Good Luck

I saw a special on an Amtrak trip that starts in New Orleans (or maybe Dallas) and goes right along the gulf shore and then up along the Atlantic shore. The best parts of the trip to me were the towns it stopped in such as Charleston and Savannah--beautiful.

We have taken many train trips. The amtrack trip from Denver over the Sierra Nevada Mts. is awesome, especially in the winter when the moutains are covered with snow. We flew to Denver and took the train to Sacremento, California. We also took a grat train trip from Toronto to Vancover. It is another good trip. It is a relaxing way to travel and meet nice people. The food was especially good on the Candanian trip. Meals were included with our sleeping compartment.

I really like VIA Rail's Canadian Train from Vancouver to Jasper (or Edmonton). There is a connecting train that really takes you through British Columbia's Wilderness - its called the Skeena, and takes you from Jasper to Prince Rupert. You can do a fantastic circle trip by taking the Canadian to Jasper, the Skeena to Prince Rupert, and then a B.C. Ferry back to Vancouver.

http://www.viarail.com/trains
