Most convenient airport to Yosemite
Flying from the midwest and am not sure which airport to use.

Thanks
|
For airports with major connections your best bets are Sacramento, Oakland, SFO, Sand Jose or Reno. Any of them will be a 2 to 3 hours drive time from Yosemite. Just pick the one you can get the fare to.

Fresno is the closest airport but it has limited service.
|
Oops - that is San Jose , , , ,
|
The airport in Fresno is called Fresno Yosemite International Airport, though how the international works is beyond me. Fresno is served by the following airlines:

Air Wisconsin/United Express

Alaska Airlines

Allegiant Airlines

America West/Mesa Airlines

American/American Eagle

Continental Airlines

Delta Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines

Horizon Airlines

Northwest Airlines

Skywest Airlines/United

United Airlines

you can find schedules and info at: http://www.flyfresno.org/default.asp

Fresno by far is the closest to Yosemite if you can get there from where you are. Runnerup would probably be San Jose. Sacramento is about 3 hours to Yosemite.

Sorry to disagree, Janis. I hate Fresno after being raised some miles from there. However, it is much more convenient to Yosemite than any of the other mentioned airports since they are around 3 hours away.

AA, for one, has connections through Dallas-Fort Worth, which should be convenient from the midwest.

Flying through Fresno is a little more expensive than the other airports mentioned in the above post, but it's dollars vs. three hours driving. Take your pick.

Dick Yeager

Andy,

Fresno is more convenient in terms of proximity, but in terms of price, your best bet would be to fly into San Jose International Airport www.sjc.org and drive to Yosemite from there.
|
David that's price thing is very presumptuous on your part as you don't know anything about her flight needs. Until there is more research done to truly state that from her start point to San Jose is cheaper we should probably stick with answering her original question which was (What is the)"Most convenient airport to Yosemite?" A smaller airport, closer to Yosemite would be more convenient in many respects other than distance. Fresno probably has a much easier security line, for one, wouldn't you say?
|
X,

Just checked the fares on Travelocity.com
Chicago to Fresno: Lowest fare $365
Chicago to San Jose: Lowest fare $178

I think that is a no brainer.

Andy's original question was which airport to use, not which one is more convenient.
|
X,

I stand corrected. Andy did mention about convenience in the title of the post. I believe that he also is concerned with price as well.
|
How about Stockton?
|
Fresno wins! Now lets get on with our life and talk about what there is to do in Bakersfield.
|
Dick Y.: I know Fresno "is much more convenient to Yosemite than any of the other mentioned airports since they are around 3 hours away."

I did say Fresno is the closest airport but that it has limited service. Flights into Fresno is VERY expensive.

Andy: Several posters have said San Jose is the most convenient. While it is true SJ is a little closer, because of terrible Bay area traffic, the drive from Oakland or SJ takes just about the same as from Sacramento.
