mosquitos on sanibel island

Hello.
My husband, five year old daughter and I are considering going to Sanibel Island, Florida in March, 2003. From what I've read, it seems like March is still considered to be the "winter" season and mosquitos would not be a problem. Is there someone out there who can confirm this? Since the outbreak of the West Nile Virus, we are somewhat concerned.

Thank you!

This map of West Nile cases in FL during 2002 should be reassuring to you.

http://cindi.usgs.gov/hazard/event/west_nile/florida/fl_human_oct_09.html

There were only 7 human cases in the entire state, and none in either Charlotte or Lee Counties.

We've been in Sanibel primarily in the summer and a couple of one day trips during the winter. No-see'ums are the problem, not mosquitoes. I don't recall seeing them there, though there probably are some. It's certainly nothing you need to worry about, however.

March is probalby the low time for mosquitos.

If you want to be extra safe, get yourself some "Off Botanicals".
This is a natural preventative and it really works.
Smeels pretty good too.
Have fun!

Hello.
Thank you both for your replies...they are helpful and thanks for the "off-botanicals' suggestion. I really appreciate your insight!

Lori

If you worry about west nile you'd just have to stay home and who wants to do that?! Be sure to bring binoculars to Sanibel, the bird watching is unbelievable. Take a side trip to Corkscrew Swamp too. You should go on a kayak outting (the five year old could sit in a double kayak easily) with the "outfitter" that is at the Tarpon Bay place. It is really great and very easy! They offer tours if you're nervous about going alone.
