MOSQUITOS
WILL MOSQUITOS BE A HUGE PROBLEM IN LATE AUGUST IN FAIRBANKS?
KN |
PROBABLY NOT. THEY ARE WORSE IN JULY.
By the way, why are we shouting in all caps? It is much easier to read when your caps lock is not on. |
BE SURE TO TAKE SOME REPELLENT WITH DEET.
Wow, I feel better. It's been a frustrating afternoon. The shouting helped. |
I HATE MOSQUITOS!!!! I LOST A WHOLE PINT OF BLOOD TODAY JUST FILLING UP THE BIRD BATHS!
Wow, you're right, that did feel good :-D |
ISN'T FUNNY! YOU CAN ALWAYS TELL WHEN SOMEONE WILL BE SHOUTING.
Simply by reading their title - if that's in caps then the whole message is. :-) |
AAAHHHHHHHH KELLY CLARKSON!
That did feel good... (Sorry that I have nothing helpful to add to this post). |
STOP FILLING UP THE BIRDBATHS.
I like the little birdies too but the birdbaths are just breeding grounds for mosquitos. |

ONLY IF YOU DON'T CHANGE THE WATER REGULARLY. otherwise they're fine the mozzies don't have a chance to breed. |
OUR MOSQUITOS ARE SO BIG...
(how big are they?) ...THEY TOSS IN A JIGGER OF VODKA AND AN OLIVE AND HAVE A BATHTINI! |
I was so distracted by the CAPS, that I actually thought the OP was asking about mosquitos in FAIRBANKS, KANSAS !
Were Dorothy's ruby slippers ever recovered from MISSOURI ? Marion |
hdm, LOL
but your mosquitos are only a 'big problem' not a HUGE PROBLEM :-) |
hdm, LOL! :-D
Yes, I'm aware but there's a method to my madness. First, I watch for the "swimmers" (approx. 7 days from stealing my blood until hatch time); then, I dump the water and set the top of the bird bath in the sun until the remains wiggle 'till they die; only then do I refill. They're coming from elsewhere and if they would just send to me their address.... ;-) |
Well, now that we're on the topic of the little buggers, has anyone found a product that actually keeps them away when you want to sit out in the backyard in the evening? Ours seem to think that citronella candles are aromatherapy.
|
slow burning cat-tails work well (in our part of PA they used to be called "punks") but I don't know if you're allowed to pick them anymore.
|
HERE IS THE ONLY THING THAT WORKS FOR MOSQUITOS:
http://www.bugshirt.com/diagrams.htm BUY THE ELITE ONE - IT'S GREAT! (I really think people post in all caps because they simply think their question is more important than all the others.) |
Friends of ours swear by their mosquito magnate--runs on propane and costs @ $265. for the model that covers 1/2 acre. We use a box fan on it's highest setting when sitting out on the deck.

Yikes. I just want to sit in the backyard, not drive through plutonium. Just kidding. I appreciate the suggestion but, um, no. I will try the fan suggestion, though. We used to use 'punk' to light our firecrackers when I was a kid. I never realized they were cat-tails. They don't grow around here anyway so it's not really an option. I was kind of hoping for a good candle, coil, or something easy and unobtrusive. Wishful thinking? |
Best defense... buy a block of dry ice. Throw it somewhere in your yard away from people. All of the mosquitos will congregate around the ice (mosquitos locate prey from their carbon dioxide emissions... since dry ice is pure frozed CO2... problem solved).

really? I've never heard that before! Now there's an idea I can use! |

We use anything known to man to try to stop mozzies in our yard. We have 'vernal pools' in the woodland in our yard. We have a Mosquito Magnet (works to a degree), we use Tiki Torches around the deck (I bought some nice glass ones from Linens and Things) Citronella candles on the deck rail and bug spray. Although realistically when we have a party I tend to be the 'mosquito magnet' some of us are just more attractive to the little suckers, I guess :-( |
