W have changed our vacation plans from Washington State to " one tank of gas" trips.. Example: Sacramento to Tahoe or Northern Calif. coast
Plus I do not get the impression that motel - hotel prices will be any cheaper !!!

If occupancy rates start to drop, then lodging owners will drop their rates to attract guests. High fuel costs may mean people vacation closer to home, but that doesn't necesarily mean occupancy rates will drop - hotels will just be filled with people from the surrounding area rather than from farther away. Plus, the falling dollar makes travel to the US from other countries more attractive.

Yes, gas is terrible! My vacation this year is not involving any kind of car rentals, or long distance driving for that matter! Too bad vacation has to revolve around gas prices:(

We aren't doing any driving on our big vacation this summer either, but that is just a coincidence - not because of high gas prices. We are planning a couple long weekend driving trips though.

Out of curiosity, I did some calculations to see what sort of bite the high gas prices will take for our driving trips.

I assumed 25 miles to the gallon and an increase in cost of $1 per gallon. For every 100 miles driven, it would cost an additional $4. Not chump change, but not a big enough increase in cost for me to change my vacation plans if I were planning a long driving trip.

There is an article in the NY Times that lists some gas prices on the Central coast on March 11.

Cambria $3.95, Big Sur $4.80, Gorda $5.20.
