More questions about Kauai...

My bf was in Honolulu in the ?late '70's and said they were advised to use caution about driving (or strolling) in unknown/ off the beaten path areas after dark. He wanted me to ask if that holds true for Kauai as well. Also, is there a K-mart or Wal-mart there? What about farmer's markets? We aren't going on vacation until Oct. or maybe even early Nov., but if you look up "obsessive-compulsive planners" in th Canadian Encyclopedia, you'll see our pictures! Thanks in advance.
ja

We were on Kauai in late Oct. 2001. As in most places, you need to be careful walking alone at night. Not that Kauai is dangerous!! It is beautiful! The people were friendly and very helpful. There is a WalMart, K-Mart, Safeway, Hilo Hattie's. You name it, it's there. There are farmer's markets, too. Check the papers when you get there. You will need a car to get around. The island is not big, but to really see it you need to drive. Don't get a convertible, though! It rains every day! Not enough to really bother you, but it's still rain! Enjoy your trip. I can hardly wait until we go back.
We've been traveling to Kauai for the past 14 years and have never experienced any problems with straying off the beaten path. In fact, we thrive on it, always trying to discover a "hidden beach," hiking path or out of the way place we have yet to experience. We always take caution in locking our vehicle as we would if we were on the mainland, but have never had a problem in Kauai with that as well. Yes, there is a K-mart in Kauai and it has great prices on liquor and many other items as well - just like at home. Farmer's markets meet all over the island - different days for different parts of the island, i.e., Monday is Old Koloa time at noon (we never miss that one). Great place for purchasing fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers for your condo or hotel room. We leave for Kauai next month (Feb. 20) to be exact and look forward to it as much on this trip as on our first. You're not obsessive-compulsive, just early planners and you'll be all that more prepared. We have met quite a few Canadians on our travels to the Garden Isle. Enjoy; it's our favorite of the Sandwich Isles. The beauty of this island, especially the North Shore, is unsurpassed.

Have been to Kauai 3 times and have absolutely never, at any time, felt uncomfortable about being anywhere, day or night.

I felt as if it was the safest place in the world, and I'm from NYC. Letting my guard down was tough at first, but everyone you meet is either on vacation or is dependant on vacationeers. Have a great time, use common sense and remember you aren't in Honolulu

Never had a problem in Kauai either... But from my guide books, what they are referring to when they warn you not to stray off the path is not to wander onto private property where you could accidentally stumble across someone's marijuana crop. That's dangerous anywhere in the world, including Kauai.
