The natives pronounce it CariBEEan. Sao Paulo pronounced SaN Paulo-also by the natives.

Norm Coleman moved from NY to Minnesota to buy a US Senate seat more easily. He was caught several times calling our state "Minnesoter" which is a dead give away for an east coaster. He got busted but his advertising budget won him the seat.

Now you've confused me more - are you sure Hanauma is pronounced how-NAH-ma, or is it ha-NOW-ma, which would more correctly follow the spelling?

I'm assuming, if there is no glottal stop, or okina, then it should be pronounced ha-NOW-ma, right?

My error -- yes, the correct pronunciation would be hah-NOW-mah
