That looks like a very bad situation. Were any people in the way of it?

MichelleY May 24th, 2017 08:40 AM

I think the original slide was earlier this winter but more of the hill came down. ?

StuDudley May 24th, 2017 08:55 AM

This is a new slide.

They are just not having a lucky year. Prayers for the communities.

Thanks Stu, terrible news for the residents and businesses.I have my doubts if the replacement bridge will be done end of September also.

This may be the first year in the past 20 or so that I won't have dinner at Nepenthe.

It's Mud Creek which is one of the two major slides that have been closed for a while now but a LOT more of it came down Saturday night. Work and local access had already been halted as the hillside was looking unstable. The other major slide, Paul's Slide, has also had enough recent activity for work to have stopped for a few days now. It was originally hoped that the southern end of the highway could be reopened up to Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge by summer but now it looks like the bridge will be done first.

Wow, Stu, that last comment landed wrong for me.

An awful lot of people are out of work and/or may lose their businesses because of this, and are massively inconvenienced, maybe even endangered, by isolation in the meantime. It's very sad.

Patty May 24th, 2017 02:09 PM

Caltrans had also installed gates on either side of Mud Creek so no one should have been in the area.

georgeb944 May 25th, 2017 03:41 AM

Sorry to hear of the closure. Back in the day, I took my first acid trip in Big Sur.

mabella101 May 25th, 2017 09:09 AM

I had the same thoughts, how could they know that no cars were trapped underneath. I didn't realize that the road had already been closed in that area. Also read that they were already semi isolated due to the buckling if the Pfeiffer bridge. How sad for that area.

NewbE May 25th, 2017 09:20 AM

I read that repair crews were working on that area when they began to feel unsafe. One man said he got hit in the head by a rock! So they wisely decided to stop work and leave, and then the new slide happened.

Patty May 25th, 2017 09:36 AM

Yeah, this is all happening within a roughly 50 mile stretch that was already closed except to local residents and they stopped letting locals through Mud Creek 3 weeks ago.

Thank you, NewbE

NewbE May 25th, 2017 09:55 AM

Oh, you're welcome, but now I think I got that info from Stu's original link!

sf7307 May 25th, 2017 10:17 AM

I think Stu's point was that the businesses in the area are being seriously affected by the slides and bridge collapse.

Patty May 26th, 2017 05:46 AM

That section of the highway may be closed for a year http://www.montereyherald.com/genera...sed-for-a-year

NewbE May 26th, 2017 07:18 AM

And that's if it doesn't slide further.
