More help with transporation in San Francisco
We will be returning at night (10-11 pm) from Sausalito on Bus #80 to San Francisco. We will be staying at Bush & Powell Streets. There are only 3 stops on this bus in San Francisco: Golden Gate & Polk, Mission & 1st, and 8th & Folsom. Can someone help me to navigate how to get back to our hotel from one of these stops?
|
The area around 8th & Folsom isn't very nice, so I wouldn't want to be dropped there in the evening. Golden Gate & Polk is a little better, but if it were me I'd get dropped at Mission & 1st. You could then take a short cab ride (if you don't see a cab @ Mission & 1st, walk 1 block north to Market).
|
That's what I would do, as well.
|
You probably figured it out already but Mission & 1st is closest, walk on 1st toward Market Street, cross Market, walk the short block on Sansome or Battery, Left on Bush, Powell is 5 blocks. Golden Gate & Polk is also possible, but the safest walk at 11pm is a longer walk--up Polk (north) 7 or 8 blocks, right on Bush 7 or 8 blocks.
|
You could also take the 38 Geary bus from its turnaround at the Transbay Bus Terminal at 1st and Market. The 38 will head westward from this point and you can get off at Powell, then walk towards Bush. Powell St. o.k. for safety around 11:00 p.m., no worries.
|
Sorry, made an error!
The turnaround for the 38 is at MISSION and First, in front of the Transbay Bus Terminal. I think this would be very close to where the Golden Gate Transit #80 woul let you out. |
Oh, I can't go on vacation without finding some strange post about public transportation ;)
First of all, where is your information coming from? Bus 80 makes all stops on Van Ness, and if you got your 3 stops from the website - THESE ARE ONLY THE TIME POINTS! Not all stops. Or is it going express at night? Maybe you'll have an option to get off on Van Ness (confirm with GG Transit, can you call or e-mail them?) and take bus 30 down to Stockton and Sutter? There is no stop on Bush, there is a tunnel. Walk up Sutter to Powell, on to Bush. |
You can find all the detail you want at www.511.org. go to the transit trip planner and input the desired locations and time. it will tell you exactly what you can do and will show a map if you have to walk from the bus stop.

I think Faina is right. And even most express busses will still stop on request especially at night-- won't they?
Meanwhile, I suppose we'll find lovestotravel has already done this trip. |
No, his other post says October.

No I haven't gone on my trip yet. And I am a she, not a he. Do you really thing My husband would spend all this time on the computer planning? He does read the books I bring hims from the library for our next destination, but I do all the main research. That's okay, though, I love it. I am currently planning 4 trips, so it is a little crazy right now. Thanks for the advise on the buses. I was about to just forget it and pay for a taxi, but I hate to waste my money if I don't need to. I will try the website you mentioned or call and talk to someone. Any great suggestions for San Francisco? We are planning an all day trip to Yosemite one day and one to Muir Woods and the wine country on another day. The rest of the time we plan to explore San Francisco. We are planning to do the walking tour of Chinatown and North Beach in the evening that takes you to a lot of the different restaurants; do stuff at Fisherman's Wharf, go to Golden Gate park and Grace Cathedral, and take a cruise around Alcatraz. Also taking the ferry to Sausalito to the murder mystery dinner. Any thing else that I missed?
|
Instead of taking a cruise around Alcatraz, I highly recommend taking the boat TO Alcatraz and doing the tour. The Blue & Gold fleet (http://blueandgoldfleet.com/) are the only ones allowed to take you to the Rock. The tours are run by the National Park Service at no cost, and it's quite interesting. I highly suggest advance reservations as the boats are almost always sold out.

"Do you really thing My husband would spend all this time on the computer planning?" LOL no offense to the very few male posters here, but this is so true!
And I agree with Alan: visit Alcatraz instead of a tour "around it". You can see the island even from San Francisco, the best part is to visit the former jail. And to take pictures in the jail cells. |
Hi loves, the SF Chronical reported about a week ago that starting the end of September (I can't remember the exact date) Hornblower's will be operating the tour boats to Alcatraz and that they will be leaving from Pier 31 1/2 instead of 41 1/2. Have a beautiful time in SF and the surrounding areas!!
|
I didn't realize that's changing (in just a couple days!). Here's the new web site for boat tickets:

Thanks alan, due to strong winds my computer was down for awhile, so I couldn't do a search for loves or anyone else who might be interested in Alcatraz.
It doesn't seem to me that I have seen much publicity regarding the change to Hornblower's taking over the Alcatraz Tours. |
Strong winds? Oh, so it's not only SF!
|
Hi Faina, so SF had horrible wind too I take it. It has quieted down here compared to how it was all day. And we had a Ferterlizer Factory s/e of us that caught on fire early this morning, and fires n/e of us in Yolo County so the sky was grey, the air has been terrible, the wind strong and miserable. So I stayed inside and took everything out of my walkin closet, tossed items, rearranged and consequently thanks to Mother Nature and the fires I am so organized, lol.
