Mopeds in Lieu of a Car on North Shore, Kauai?
I have heard that it can be difficult to find parking at some of the prime beaches on Kauai's North Shore. I was wondering if any of you have rented Mopeds for frequenting various North Shore beaches and just to get around town? Also, is it possible and practical to just get around on Mopeds instead of renting a car at all. Perhaps taxi from the airport and then rent mopeds. It seems like it would be more fun to do this and if we aren't planning to leave the North Shore much, would this be a good option? Your thoughts on this are most appreciated! Thanks!!

Roads and traffic patterns on Kauai are not designed for mopeds. It is an extremely dangerous idea in my opinion.

Not a good idea at all. Kauai is NOT Bermuda, where all the tourists drive them. In addition to what sistahlou wrote, also remember that there are lots of tourists on the road (driving cars) who have absolutely no idea where they're going, and are also frequently looking at the scenery rather than the traffic. The word SPLAT immediately comes to mind when I think of mopeds,
I've seen too many close calls and/or injured people because of them. My advice: Rent a car instead. ((S))((*)) |
Frequent tropical showers could also put a damper on your vacation.

Please do NOT plan to ride a moped on our northshore. Our 2-lane highway has no bike lane and those danged mopeds (and little electric carts) don't have enough "umph" to get up the hills at the posted speed limit.
The only beaches that may have parking issues, are Ke`e and Makua. All the other beaches have ample parking (except on holiday weekends). The solution is easy -- get to Ke`e and Makua early. 8-) |
Okay, thanks. We will definitely rent a car!
