Moonlight Monuments Tour
 

We are visiting DC the weekend after this ( January 15) and plan to take the moonlight monuments tour. Since it is winter weather is always iffy and so we are hoping we can wait and get tickets when we are there. Is this a mistake in terms of risking it being sold out? I know Jan is not a busy time.

I would find it hard to imagine that the tickets would sell out in January, but it is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday long weekend, so there's always a chance. Does Old Town Trolleys require pre-payment for a reservation? Do you have more than one evening available to take the tour? These are a couple things to consider. (If it were me, I'd probably wait because, as you know, the weather is really iffy in D.C. at that time.)

We only have one evening; they don't require prepayment though tickets are cheaper online though we could do it online that day. I think I'll watch the weather reports.

We are going the same week end and shall do what we did in a previous trip. Pre arranged with a cab we took during the day for much less than 60 dollars to have a night tour. It worked fine with us,....an option. We like it because we are free to do it when we feel like ti.

I took a look at the fare chart in a DC taxi after the change over to meters in 2009, and saw that the official fixed rate for one hour was $25, with each additional 15 minutes charged at $6.25. This was over a year ago, so it might have changed somewhat.

I think that the next time I have visitors, I'll spring for a two-hour tour of the monuments (being driven from place to place and having the car wait ten minutes or so for a brief look around each site) and consider that $50 (plus a generous tip) well spent.

This might also be worthwhile for a family of three or four, especially in the evening when traffic is light and 90 minutes would let you hit the highlights, if the cost of multiple tickets on a tour bus would break the budget.

jubilada, how was the tour? Years ago, I drove my nephew around to see the monuments at night and I wonder if the tour added a lot to the value other than the transportation.
