Myself,my wife and her grandaughter 13 y.o. will leave from Brazil and later on from L'Île Perrot (Québec,Canada) in August, 2005,to Lancaster(PA), via 1) Kearny (NJ)where we'll stay with friends, 2)Washington (DC),3)Gettysburg(VA),4)Richmond(VA),5)Philadelphi a(Ph)6)Lancaster(PA),7)Albany(NY), 8)Niagara Falls and 9)Montreal(Qc). Does anyone know if this is the best route to travel or have a better suggestion. Will appreciate it. Tks.

I know that language may be hard but try to add some more details. Many of these cities are hours apart-this trip looks very ambitious & tiring. Based on your note, consider hitting Montreal, Niagara Falls & Albany on the way south to Kearny. From Kearny, it's an easy drive to Lancaster which has great train service to Philly.Logically you may want to visit DC for a nite or 2 and then go further south to Richmond.Consider a return thru Charlottesville, VA up Rte. 81 where you could hit Gettysburg on the way back to Lancaster. At a minimum, consider dropping Albany & Richmond and add Williamsburg, VA.

Hi cheapbutnice, sorry I haven't told I'll be travelling by car. Have been in Williambursg two years ago. The idea of the trip is to follow part of the Civil War Trial and the Amish. Will be in Manhattan and in Wash. DC for sure. Tks for the info. bacellar

Hi

Your trip looks ambitious and will probably be very enjoyable. One minor discrepancy - Gettysburg is in Pennsylvania NOT Virginia and is actually west of Harrisburg. You might try heading up to Gettysburg from Richmond. It's actually a short drive (about 2 1/2 hours northwest of Washington DC.

There is also a Rt 15 you can connect with near Fredericksburg VA which will take you around the west side of Washington DC and out of the major traffic jams on I-95.

Enjoy your trip!!

Hi LN,tks, do u think u'll be able to help me with the best itinerary south and north?

I live in Lancaster-LN thanks for clearing up Gettysburg's home state.bacellar, Gettysburg is an easy hour south of Harrisburg not west.My recommendation of a route would be a metropolitan-focused drive south down route 95 thru Philly & DC to Charlottesville. Study the late 1700's there, drive west to Skyline Drive (Shenandoah Natl. Park) and then take the Rte 81 corridor north to PA. Stops along the way at New Market, Harpers Ferry & Gettysburg will be an interesting Civil War tour.Hersheypark might be a great stop for a nite or 2 that would allow a day of fun & a day trip to Lancaster. You will see that you have taken a huge loop with lots of very different scenery but be aware that the Harrisonburg, VA area has many Amish folks in a much less commercial environment.

Hi again

You'd probably do much better using Mapquest or perhaps AAA and their trip maps. I can try to help you around the washington DC area as that's been my home base and others will help you through the New York, New Jersey, and Virginia areas.

I would consider going west of Washington DC on your return trip from Richmond VA and then going onto Gettysburg and then east to Lancaster probably using Rt 30 through Pennsylvania. The Amish country is lovely - only problem is when you encounter a buggy in front of you on one of the highways on a Sunday morning and cannot pass!!

Hi again Bacellar2

In looking at your itinerary again it looks like you might consider going to Albany on your trip south from Montreal. There is an Interstate 87 through Vermont and Massachussetts which would take you close to Albany so you might look a bit closer at the map and see what I'm looking at.
