Monticello to Virginia Beach

We are going to visit Monticello in late September. We were thinking of going to Virginia Beach or some oceanside venue after our visit. How would one go and how long would it take to drive to:

Virginia Beach, etc. (Can you swim in the ocean in early October?)

Thanks.

VB is about 180 miles from Charlottesville and the trip takes a little over 3 hours in non rush hour traffic. The most direct route would be I-64 from C'ville to Norfolk and I-264 from Norfolk to VB. If you can plan your trip to arrive prior to 3 in the afternoon you will likely miss the traffic choke points, normally 3-6 pm around Richmond, the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, and potentially anywhere from Norfolk to VB.

You can still swim in the ocean in early Oct. The gulf stream keeps the water warm enough to swim into November.

I think the VB oceanfront is a little bit cheesy, boardwalks and all, appealing to a young crowd of kids. Try nearby First Landing State Park for a less cluttered beach experience.
