>>San Luis Obispo(Cal-Poly)is the 7th deadliest city in the state to bike<<
That is because it is a college town and there are hundred of cyclists - ergo more bike accidents. I don't know what source you are citing - but I'm pretty sure Davis would rank at or near the top, simply because there are thousands of bikes. Even though the pre-mile accident rate is very low. |
It's sort of like how Amsterdam is the bike theft capitol of the world... :)
I do think the rate in SLO has a lot to do with the high concentration of bikes and bike riders rather than anything particularly dangerous about riding in that area. And being a college town, I am also willing to bet that there is a fair amount of biking-under-the-influence as well. Regarding Morro Bay - to bike TO Morro Bay, a person would have to ride along Hwy 1 or 41. Hwy 41 is quite narrow in spots without any shoulder in places. Hwy 1 is a freeway in that area for all intents and purposes - even the sections that aren't technically freeway and allow cyclists - people routinely drive 65-80 mph through there. It has more shoulder, but being that close to traffic moving that fast is sketchy. These rides are not for the casual cyclist. |
janisj - I like your "per mile" assessment but they use per capita, and since students are not *real people* here that inflated the numbers. Yeah, Davis is right up there with the best of us. Welcome to the DAnger ZOne!
Okay, I had to dig the morning paper out of the garbage for you! :) http://www.sanluisobispo.com/2013/12...-injuries.html november_moon: Neighbor was a member of the SLO bicycle club and biked all over the county, state, U.S. and Canada. Young lady just put a beam on him. That was 11 years ago, not sure texting was an issue yet. We take good care of his widow and include her often. His route was Los Osos Valley Rd to SouthBay Blvd, (Los Osos to South Morro Bay) off the beaten path. It's like any rural road. He biked the Big Sur stretch a number of times and that spot on the map is just plain crazy. |
I think anyone biking Big Sur needs to have his or her head examined. I've seen cyclists out there and I think they are absolutely insane. There are a lot of roads where cyclists can ride, but I don't think they should. Last week I saw a cyclist on Hwy 152 over Hecker Pass. Completely nuts.

November Moon, did I screw up on my link?!?
On the highway, you do need to be careful, and I agree with NM Hwy 1, particularly Big Sur is dangerous to cycle, although I know a number of riders who've gone from SF to LA on HWY 1, including Big Sur, and survived. But they have their own bikes and know how they handle. And the Carmel dog beach is awesome, including for humans. |
