Monterey Peninsula short-term rentals

Are all Monterey Peninsula short-term rentals illegal, or only those that aren't registered/paying taxes?

Apparently they are legal in Pacific Grove. AFAIK they are illegal on the rest of the Peninsula (not my personal knowledge -- that is something Patty, who lives there, has posted a few times)

There are legal rentals in Pacific Grove. They must have a license from the city.

Short term rentals are illegal in the cities of Carmel by the Sea and Monterey and both cities have started recent crackdowns.

In coastal areas of unincorporated Monterey County which includes parts of Carmel that aren't within city limits, Pebble Beach, Carmel Highlands and Big Sur, they're still currently illegal but the county has been working on an ordinance. Short term rentals are allowed in inland areas of unincorporated Monterey County i.e. Carmel Valley.

Here are some recent article related to short term rentals http://www.mcvra.org/media
