Monterey Bay Lodge or Monterey Best Western

Need an inexpensive but comfortable lodging for Monterey towards the end of May, tops we would like to spend is 200 for both nights. Stay is for sat-sun night and the sat is increasing the rate. Im surprised that the holiday inn express wants rates for over 200 night, seems a little pricey but I suppose its the location of cannery row.

Ideally am looking for a place where we could leave the car so we dont have to worry about driving and parking spaces in the evening.

Best western is 825 Abrego Street and monterey bay inn is 55 Camino Aguajito. Both are around 200 for both nights and both are offer free parking.

Any advice or suggestions on these or are properties. Do you think we would do better to stay in a nearby town and drive into Monterey? Thanks for all your help.

You do not need to worry about parking in the evening wherever you go. You will always find something. The Best Western or Mty. Bay Inn are fine for walking to the wharf or downtown area but starts to be a stretch for Cannery Row.If price is an issue, Marina are may be cheaper and only a 12 min. hiway drive to the heart of Monterey.

Check out the Best Western Monterey Beach Resort. Rooms are going for 89/night until the end of May.

www.montereybeachhotel.com is the website. You are directly on the ocean and the property is very nice. It's been a favorite with our family for over twenty years!! ***kim***

hi kim, i havent gotten lower than 159 for the best western monterey beach. Do you need to call directly and request a special rate for that price?

Go to the website @ www.montereybeachresort. There are various packages you can look at there.

The Frequent Guest packages start @ 89/night but this is not with an oceanview and probably only good for Sun. night.

We receive postcards a few times a year telling us about the rates. The website will give you more information. I hope you get to try it!! It's really nice and it's just so wonderful to be able to walk right out to the long stretch of beach there. Have fun!! ***kim***

Penne, please note that you cannot easily walk anywhere from the Beach Resort; you'd have to take your car even to downtown Monterey. It's a short drive, but I thought you should know. Enjoy your trip!

Good point, E! Some people don't like this, others it doesn't bother at all. Have you stayed at this property? ***kim***

No, I lived in Monterey so didn't stay at any of the hotels--all I can ever comment on is their location and reputation. Restaurants I have opinions on, though!

Which one was your favorite on the wharf? We like Cafe Fina and Domenico's for the fresh sand dabs! YUMMY!! ***kim***

Yeah, I can't say I ever had a great meal on the wharf. After a couple of tries, we gave up on it. Maybe we were just unlucky; or weird--we didn't like the Fishwife either. I loved Monterey's Fish House for a nice meal, and Sea Harvest on Lighthouse for something more casual but also impeccably fresh. Nothing like selecting right from the case! I could cry just thinking about what a seafood paradise we lived in--where I live now, fresh seafood is a rarity indeed! I hope you continue to enjoy it!

Penne, I wish I could help, but again, as a resident, I never stayed in any of the hotels in the area, and visiting friends stayed with us. All I can say is that there are many, many motels in the area and all but one or two of them looked OK to me from the outside. But lodging there is expensive, as I'm sure you've noticed! The other thing I can add is that it will be hard, if not impossible, to walk all over from any one motel, because, for example, the wharf is on the opposite side of town from the Aquarium and Cannery Row; but you should be able to find a place that will allow you to walk to some stuff. Sorry I couldn't help more!
