Montauk Long Island
I would like to spend a long weekend in Montauk. I am looking for something moderately priced, clean and near the beach. I have never been there before so I need some guidance and some suggestions about the area and places to eat, shop, etc.
Thanks! |
There is a place called Daunt’s Albatross Motel that may fit the bill for you, especially if you’re not looking at July or August., which are probably all booked anywhere at all reasonable. |
Why not post this in the U.S. Forum where many more folks who may know something about that island will see it? I see you only posted here.

I'm not that saavy and I guess I did not realize where I was posting but I believe the Team at Fodor's moved my post. Thanks for your input.

Thanks, I will check that place out. Someone told me about Gurney's but I read and it seems very old - maybe it was refurbished, not sure yet. The other place I eard about was the Montauk Beach House. Ever heard of them?

Gurney's has become an upscale spa....you are looking at $300 minumum per night for most dates...they did do a big reno a few years ago but I have not been there in years.....we are oon the North fork...very different ambience.
Does it have to be Montauk? https://www.gurneysresorts.com/montauk/ |
Weekends on both the North Fork and South Fork during June-September are high season (read as expensive) and also sell out rapidly.
|
No, I was just under the impression from talking to people that it might be more reasonable there and we could be on the water. Maybe I am fooling myself with the word "moderately priced" and maybe I should consider the fall instead of the summer. Do you have a suggestion other than Montauk on Long Island?
|
Montauk has become very fashhionable and there are no bargains left. You might look at the North Fork.. See if you can find a B&B in East Marion or Greenport, and then you can be within easy reach of restaurants and (often rocky) beaches.
Further East The Orient Inn is lovely and I have put up relatives there..you need a bike or a car to get around from there, although the innkeepers serve a lovely breakfast and dinner with prior arrangement. The man of the couplel who own the place is a jazz musician and both owners are truly lovely. https://www.orientinn-ny.com |
Duncan Inn ( a fancied up former motel) in Jamesport on the North Fork may be OK. They only take reservations directly (no rooms in season via online agencies). You will need to have a car to do anything on the North Fork.
