Montana - SW
Where is a good place to stay for a straight week in Montana, that is close to Yellowstone. Where you can have access to horseback riding, fishing, all the basic outdoors activities.

I am no authority on this, but here's a suggestion:
- Red Lodge, Montana near the northwest entrance. The road from red lodge over Bear Tooth pass to Yellowstone is breathtaking. Red Lodge is a little tourist town. I'm sure you could find all the activities you listed near there.

Personally, I like Red Lodge or Cooke City. Red Lodge is a bit farther out but has access to all you are interested in. Cooke City is right on the border of Yellowstone (east). Both are very small towns with not a whole bunch happening and they do not have luxurious resorts. Just basic but very, very clean accomodation.

If you wish to know where we stay, please reply and I will email you.

Good luck.

Jim, isn't Red Lodge Northeast, not north west?

One thing of note that is great fun around Red Lodge is the pig races just outside of town. They are so much fun.

Yes, northeast is indeed correct.

Check out the 320 Guest Ranch in beautiful Big Sky, MT, in the Gallatin Canyon on the Gallatin River.

I've been by there many times and always think it looks awesome. I've had friends who are very dicriminating and they raved about it.

West Yellowstone is a nice, laid back town that is right on the west entrance. There is lots of good fishing in the area and I'm sure other activities as well.

If you plan to make day trips into Yellowstone, be advised that Yellowstone is huge and you still have to drive a good distance to get to the usual sites once you get into the park.

Why not rent a cabin in Yellowstone and do the activities in the park? As you have already been told, you will have a considerable drive from anywhere you decide to stay outside the park. We rented a cabin 2 summers ago and found we drove enough just to get around in the park. Good Luck and Enjoy. Yellowstone is a true treasure.
