Money Conversion

Hi!

I'm travelling from NYC to Scotland next week.

Is there a place with a good rate for converting US Dollars to Euros/GBP in NYC? Should I get Euros or GBP for Scotland, or will it not make a difference?

Actually, is it better to go through a bank to convert money, use credit cards, or use an ATM machine? I imagine foreign exchange bureaus at the airports will be very expensive.

Cheers,

Just use the ATM when you get there. It will give you pounds, not Euros.

airport exchange is likely no more expensive than your bank at home.

that said, ATM is the way to go in pretty much any situation these days.

Scotland is part of the United Kingdon - and uses pounds not euros (the latter would be useless).

There is nowhere in the US that will give you a decent rate of exchange. If you must have some pounds before you arrive change $100 worth at the bureau de change in the departure airport. The rate will be bad - but for so little it really doesn't matter.

To get the best rate of exchange use your credit cards for as much as possible. For walking around money just pull cash from an ATM as you would here. Be sure you have a 4 digiit pin and that the ATM is linked to your checking account - those linked to savings accounts won;t work.

I would go with the ATM option as well. You can pretty much be certain you are getting good conversion rate that way.

enjoy your trip!
