MoMA- worth it?
Hi. Will be in New York in a few weeks and thinking of visiting MoMA now that it's reopened. What are people's opinions on it? Is it worth the expensive entry price? And how does it compare to the Tate Modern in London?
|
"Is it worth it" are always impossible questions to answer. It may be worth it to me but not to you.
It doesn't have as much of the avant garde art that the Tate modern has. (that goes generally to our Museum of Contemporary Art). MOMA covers the 20th century work and includes a lot of Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse. If you're worried about the steep price, you can go on a Fri. afternoon (I think from 4 or 5pm check the website) when it's free. Or, you might like to buy a citypass.com which includes MOMA, the Guggenheim, the Mus. of Natural History, the Empire State and a Circle Line cruise, all for $53. I think if you only go to 2 or3 of these, one being MOMA, it's a savings. |
If you are a fan of modern art, then, yes, it is well worth the price!

I'm not a fan of modern art and I vote yes.
On one hand, there are lots of "classic" moderns that make the museum. OTOH, there's the modern "garbage" like Jackson Pollack, a bicycle wheel on a pedestal, a blank canvas with a few dots on it, etc. that are good for their comedic value. |
I was delighted with a travelling exhibit that came to Houston from MOMA. I can only imagine how great the "real thing" would be. I'd go!

We visited MOMA recently and the visit resulted in a lot of discussion about what they'd done to the building, the space, placement - I felt it was worth a re-visit; and if what are you like you will enjoy and what you don't, will still leave you thinking and discussing, which is what I think art is supposed to do - engage you somehow. However, if you haven't seen other NYC museums, then that's a different answser and I wouldn't necessarily say you had to re-visit MOMA if you've never seen some of the other amazing musuems.

I'm also going to NYC soon and found all of these comments helpful. I really want to see Egon Scheila's and Basquiat's and I hope this will be possible by visiting MoMA and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Could anyone confirm this for me?

Hopefully, a museum will open for Barry so he can see the famous dogs playing cards painting and velvet Elvis pictures.
Pollock is garbage? Unfathomable. |
Ben_e_fit,
You won't find any Schieles at the MoMA, as far as I can recall. However the Neue Galerie should be exactly what you're looking for: http://www.neuegalerie.org Re: Basquiat, he's not my cup of tea, so can't answer that question. But, perhaps the website of the MoMA can help: http://www.moma.org/ What do you mean by the "Museum of Contemporary Art"? There is no museum with that name in NYC. Hope this helps, Andre |
Andre, thanks it does help.

The New museum of Contemporary Art is on west 22 st in Chelsea
http://www.newmuseum.org/ The Basquiat retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum closed this past June. Not sure any of his work hangs elsewhere. |
