MoMA
I have belatedly figured out that MoMa is closed for renovation. If I understand the website correctly, much of the collection is on display at MoMA Queens. Do I have that right? I am not interested in just seeing the traveling exhibitions.
I looked at the directions, but I'm confused about how to travel there. Where does one get the Local 7 in Manhattan? Or do I have to take another subway to queens and connect? Is the bus easy? How long would it take? How much would a cab cost me? Thanks! |
"much of the collection" is a bit of an exaggeration. Maybe 40 or 50 of MoMA's "greatist hits," if that. I'll leave specific transportation directions to others more familar with the subways than I, but I visited MoMA-QNS twice during the Matisse-Picasso show, once on the Number 7 subway which I picked up at Grand Central, I believe, and once on a shuttle bus from the MoMA store on 53 Street. The store remains open, but I don't know if they're still running the shuttle or not.

You can pick up the #7 train at Times Square, Grand Central or 42nd between 5th & 6th. The local train symbol has a round background, the express train symbol has a diamond shaped background.
It won't matter which train (local or express) you start out on from Manhattan. You just need to figure it out by the time you get to Queensboro Plaza which is several stops. (If you are on an express-diamond background, you need to get off at Queensboro Plaza and wait for a local-round background). You can go to www.mta.info to see what the different symbols look like. |
Unless you're going for a special exhibit, MoMA Queens is a big disappointment and not worth the journey. As stated above, only a small fraction of the permanent collection is on display; you'll be in-and-out of there in 30 minutes.
(Of course, the Matisse-Picasso exhibit was extraordinary and well worth the trip. I also went twice.). Spend more time in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, or check out the Guggenheim. Enjoy NY! |
i want to second the sentiment of "not worth the effort" - there are so many other fine art aoptions in manhattan and the queens location is substandard at best. just save moma for another time and visit the whitney for your modern art fix and icm for great photos and you'll have more than enough great art.

totally depends on the person... they still have some of the most important pieces of modern art on display... from my view point it is highly worth it...it is right off the train, and the ride isnt long

It is the cliff notes for MoMA.
