MOLOKAI - Have you been there?

Have you been to the Hawaiian island of Molokai? I'm booked to go in May. What are the best accomidations? Food? Where to snorkle? How's the weather there in May? Thanks for the help.

We went to Molokai seven years ago in December. It is one the most romantic island and was not crowded at all. We stayed at the only large resort and had reservations months ahead, but another couple we met from Germany just flew over and got a room that evening. We took the last rental car and if I remember correctly, there were very few cars, so you may want to reserve one now. We drove around the island, visiting several villages. They certainly are not fancy, but one gets the flavor of on the island. The resort where we stayed had a nice golf course along the ocean, and green fees were nearly nothing and one could golf any time. The resort was only 2 stories tall, and we had our own private view of the ocean. We even went skinny dipping at 9:00 in the morning and had a whole beach to ourselves. We enjoyed this romantic, quiet island much more than Turtle Bay, the large Hilton, and the very expensive golf course.

I was there a few months ago. To visit friends. Very beautiful and very quiet. Really only one hotel and nothing much to do Golf of course. My visit was lovely but boring and I was glad to get back to Maui. I guess it is the place to just veg and drop out. I think my friend said there is one police car ther. In answer to why she drove so fast.

It is the closest you'll get to what Hawaii once was--aside from Nihau which is closed to visitors. If you're looking for excitement, this isn't the place to be. Instead, expect a glimpse into old Hawaii, peace, tranquility, and beautiful surroundings. Visit the leper colony at Kalupapau---your hotel can arrange it or you can do it before you reach Molokai.

In March, 1995, we went to Molokai for the day on the ferry from Maui (on a ticket that included a rental car for two of us, a good deal). There wasn't much in the way of hotels there and the one we got the car at was kind of run down. If you care about good hotels, this is not the place to go.
Driving around the island was very nice. It definitely has a different atmosphere from the other islands. It seemed as if the only people on the island lived there or were there for the day like we were. In contrast to the other islands we visited, Molokai had very little tourism development. While this is appealing in some respects, I don't think I would have wanted to spend much more time there.

It was five years ago. Things do change. Molokai now doesn't get too good reviews on this bord. Hey, "nice", why won't you read some more recent posts

Pease do visit the Kalaupapa peninsula - the former 'leper colony'. It is an amazingly beautiful, haunting place - really hard to describe the experience, but totally unique. I went a couple of years ago, and am planning on going again this year. The mule ride down is pretty hairy but you must do it once (I have to admit that I'm planning on flying in this time, but am glad I did the ride, it was such an experience). The tours of the peninsula are run by a resident called Richard Marks, who drives you round in an ancient school bus - fascinating guy, a real character. There is a Molokai Mule Ride website, which you shouldn't have too much trouble tracking down. From what little I saw of Molokai otherwise, I didn't find it as inspiring as other islands, but it seemed pretty laid back and very pleasant. E-mail me if you need any more information about Kalaupapa. I think the tours and mule ride get pretty booked up, and you shouldn't have any difficulty arranging it yourself over the internet (the mule ride people sorted everything out for me - they were very helpful. Roy, Ithink, if he's still there.)
