Moki Dugway
Is the Moki Dugway part of UT 261 or do you have to turn off the main road to go up it.We were thinking about taking this route on the way to Moab was wondering if it is paved all the way or do we run into that section.

Rt. 261 including the Moki Dugway was closed as of a week ago (tues. 9/9/03). We were there that afternoon and felt lucky to be so considering the flash flooding we encountered getting there. We were watching waterfalls come off the mesa and the Moki Dugway above the Mexican Hat B&B. We watched the whitecaps in the river that was washing away the road into the Valley of the Gods. All in all an exciting experience. We drove up to the bottom of the dugway and people were all out of their cars above us moving rocks and making their way down to safety. I have it on good authority that the Moki Dugway is pretty much washed away for a fair stretch. No one was injured or killed but it will likely be a while before they rebuild the dugway. That said, the road through the Valley of the Gods was fixed by the end of the next day. Perhaps the Moki Dugway will be open sooner than I think but it would be a good thing to know before you go. |
Thanks for the info. I think we will pass on going that way
