Mamby, I would stay with the Castle
The Mohonk Mt House is lovely especially in the fall, when you can walk the trails in the gorgeous colors, and go to the nearby winerys. But it also has an older crowd . (IMHO)

Last I saw Mohonk, it was more geared toward outdoor activities. Beautiful grounds for hiking, boating, skiing. No outdoor pool, and the indoor pool was tiny (or do they have one at all??)The rooms are, in my opinion, a little dingy. Food is good, but not fine dining.
Haven't been to the Castle but from what I've read and seen, it seems more up your alley,
Have you thought about the Mayflower INN in Washington CT? That too sounds like "your kind of place"!

In another thread, I wrote a long write-up on Mohonk -- based on years of experience. I'm not sure how to direct you to that, but the bottom line is this: it's not worth the money. I'm sorry to say that because our trips to Mohonk are a family tradition, but they charge such nutty prices for such mediocre food etc. Something is wrong in the mangement of that place, it feels to me. The grounds are pretty . . .
