moab jeep rental

On the last day of our vacation in Moab in June we are going to rent a jeep to explore parts of Canyonlands. Do we need a full day or would a half day suffice to explore the trails? Also, the jeep choices are standard jeeps vs. jeeps with 4 inch lift packages, which translate into $90 vs $145. Advice would be great! Thanks!

Keep in mind the extra lift can make getting in and out of the jeep a little challenging esp if the tires are larger. If the trails aren't rough, you certainly don't need the extra lift. But if you plan to do a little easy rock crawling, you need the clearance. This really depends on the trails and your experience. If you don't have experience, it's easy to get hung up on a rock and you don't want that to happen. Have fun but stay safe.

A lift package only raises the body. The lowest point on a Jeep will still be the axle and the differential. A lift package won't change this. It will raise the center of gravity, making the Jeep less stable (more likely to tip over) and more dificult to enter/exit.

good point rm mm, I was assuming larger tires went with the lift.

d,

I would not recommend the lift Jeep. I would also not recommend trying any roads where you need it. Those roads are not for the inexperienced visitor. You need to really know what you're doing and be with a group of other vehicles.

There are 4x4 roads that are fienf or regular, easy 4x4 driving. Shafer Trail is one.

Many others in the park itself require permits far in advance that are hard to get. Check the Canyonlands web site for info on these and the permit process.

Good luck and have fun, but be wise!

We've done several of the easy trials and the regular 4x4 jeep got us everywhere we wanted to go. We always rent our from Farbee Jeep in Moab. I also recommend the Shafer trail You start out on the Potash Road, take a short detour on the White Rim trail to Musselman Arch, then go back and up the Shafter trail to Canyonlands National Park, Island in the Sky distric. Spend the day exploring the park and maybe a quick stop at Dead Horse State Park, then come back down though Long Canyon. This will take all day.

Great photos! Thanks for sharing plus the advice. Those roads look in pretty good shape. Hope we get to wheel that part of the country someday (and a stock jeep would be my preference!!!)
