Moab/Biking/Accommodation
 

Heading to Moab first week of JULY from Vancouver, BC. Wanting to mountain bike of course! Any mountain bikers out there who know some MUST do trails? As well, what are some really nice campgrounds around there? I see there are plenty...any suggestions on where to stay...? Is it ideal to stay in one spot, and then travel around to see the sites and such?

It would sure make lots of us REAL happy if you re-write this note changing only the title. Please don't use back slashes with no spaces...it has messed up everything in the left column. You'll note that all the thread titles in the left column no longer fit...and it's because of the formatting in yours.

Hopefully you will get lots of replies, but every reply will bring your note to the top again and we'll forever be looking at messed up titles until yours drops out of the top 50!! :(

The Slickrock Trail is a must, of course. And numerous other trail which you can find by consulting at a bikeshop. As for camping, we like the "Up the Creek" campground; it is in town on the road up to the start of the Slickrock Trail. Tents only, on the lawn area, both of which make it much nicer than the big, gravelly campgrounds that cater to RV's. Here is a link to all private campgrounds in the area:

Under "lodging" you will see various options for campgrounds; this one is under "private campgrounds".

I would think you could see all the sights from this one spot. It's quite popular (and a bit pricey compared to other campgrounds, but well worth it). I suggest calling them to reserve.

Porcupine Rim. Absolute classic must-do Moab mountain bike trail (but you better be an experienced mountain biker). I personally like it better than Slickrock, but, yes, you must do Slickrock as well. By the way, these 2 trails have completely different character from each other, totally different experiences.

For an easier ride, Klondike Bluffs is scenic & fun & not horribly technical. It's a very gradual uphill out & a gradual downhill back, with a hike at the end to overlook one of the national parks. You can even take novice bikers on this one.

But in July, take LOTS of water & start any of your bike rides early in the day. It's nasty hot there in summer, people have died mountain biking there without adequate water in summer. If you have a choice, spring & fall are much better for active vacations in Moab - summer is just too dangerously hot for my liking.
