Missing the Point: What's so special about sushi and wasabi?

If your dislike stems from the fact that it just tastes like rice I think you probably didn't have good sushi. The stuff I've had from some grocery stores is mostly rice and that is all it tastes like - yuck! Since it seems like you are interested, you might want to try something else with someone who knows a good sushi spot in your area. Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't (I love it); but it doesn't sound like you tried the good stuff.

Hi Donna -- Last summer we went out with friends for sushi and one of our group was not too happy about our restaurant choice because she just didn't care much for sushi. Turns out she never had "the good stuff." She loved it!
Hamachi = yellowtail, one of the tastiest, most succulent fish used in sushi.
Go to a good sushi bar with someone who knows how to order, and give it one more try. If you don't like it, you can bring the remains home to your cats, sans wasabi, of course.
By the way, in Japan they do not mix their wasabi into their soy sauce. A tiny bit of wasabi is smeared on the sushi, which is then dipped lightly into the soy sauce.

mrwun. That's true. The wasabi you get in the sushi to go is our horse radish colored. The real thing is a grated Rhizone(relative of horseradish and cabbage) and expensive but you'll get it in good Japaneese restaurants.

A bit of a tangent, but a funny story:
I was in Austria with my DH and my parents, eating at a lovely restaurant. My Dad had some dish (I forget) with a big lump of white "cheese" on the edge of the plate. He took one small bite, kept his composure, then offered a forkful(I mean a FORK FULL) to my Mom, saying, "Taste this cheese." It was horseradish, and yes, they are still married.

My husband and I are sushi lovers and if we are going to have sushi we have to sit at the sushi bar. It is part of the experience to interact with the sushi chef. We have struck up conversations we other diners and it always seems more festive than sitting at a table.

I just came back from a supermarket and got into a conversation with an airline attendent that loves sushi. During conversation I said I loved raw oysters and mussels.
And so she asked me why I didn't like sushi. LOL. Didn't have an answer. She said I probably had never had good fresh sushi. Think she is probably correct.
