MIRAGE POOL CLOSED!
 

Warning to all.<BR>We arrived at the Mirage on March 8th having booked a last minute trip only a few days earlier on the 6th calling the hotel directly. We were checked in by a very nice woman who mentioned just in passing as she handed us the key that &quot;oh by the way our pool is closed for renovations&quot; They were allowing guests to use the Bellagio pool if needed.<BR>We were shocked and very angry as my wife and I had chosen the Mirage in part due to the pool as we were planning on spending several days there. They have made it a policy NOT to tell anyone of this fact unless specifically asked.<BR>We argued and they quickly offered to reduce our rate. Further arguments with the manager got us an offer of 1 night free, then 2, then the full stay for Free! My wife decided we wanted a pool at the hotel regardless and actually managed (after more complaints)to get them to set us up a room at Bellagio. We got them to confirm the same Price!! In this case that was $99 per night!!!!!! at Bellagio!<BR>We really wanted the pool and actually preferred Bellagio from the start but didn't want to pay the $260 night charges.<BR><BR>Ended up great and very happy at Bellagio, but I wanted to warn everyone about Mirage as they are BETTING that they would lose more business by telling the truth, then in dealing with people like us. I am sure most people settle for a few $$ of their room fee and the Mirage's gamble becomes well worth it.<BR><BR>Anyway, plan accordingly.<BR><BR>

Good for you! Though I would probably have accepted the free stay instead, but obviously you guys wanted the pool. You should have asked for a free stay at Mirage but the house limo to transport you back and forth to the Bellagio pool. ;) That would be awesome to pull up to Bellagio, and step out of a limo in bathing suits and flip flops and head straight for the pool!

Loki, that is so funny. I can't imagine anything worse than getting out of limo in bathing suit and flipflops and having to parade all the way through the Bellagio to reach the pool. Strikes me as being embarrassing, not &quot;awesome&quot;. And it is interesting that you would consider taking the room at the Mirage just because it was free even if your primary interest in the trip was for the pool. Sort of reminds me of people who will go to a restuarant with food they hate only because it's cheaper than one with food that's really good.<BR><BR>Of course, I'd be happy with the free room too, but I have never used a pool in Vegas. But if someone planned their trip around the pool, I can't imagine making the room free would add much incentive when you still don't have a pool.<BR><BR>Congratulations JBG, it sure worked out for you!!

JBG: Question: Does the Bellagio have and indoor pool? If so, where is it? We've stayed twice and never got to see an indoor pool.

And your analogy isn't very good, The Mirage without the pool is not anywhere near as bad as &quot;a restaurant with food they hate&quot;. <BR><BR>JBG stated that they chose the Mirage &quot;in part&quot; because of the pool. Loki might just as well have chosen to remain at the Mirage &quot;in part&quot; because of the free room. <BR><BR>Lighten up. The thought of Loki in flip flops made me smile, only to be soured by your nastiness.

Patrick, sorry to hear that you're embarassed by the way you'd look parading thru the hotel in your bathing suit. Apparently Loki has a better body image.

JBG - thanks of the informative story. I have to say, you guys must have been good with the Mirage manager. Nowadays, they aren't too free and easy with the comps. And this, to some degree is a comp.<BR><BR>Bellagio has an outdoor pool. Not indoor.

I was wondering if they covered themselves by posting it on their web site somewhere, but I couldn't find it...<BR>Here's what they are renovating:<BR><BR>The pool at The Mirage encompasses a series of wandering, interconnected lagoons. Swim or walk to either of two palmtree-lined islands to bask in the sun or stroll between cliffs where water streams into deep grottos. Wander over one-quarter mile of shoreline, unwind in one of three jacuzzis, enjoy a water-aerobics class or take the plunge via three different waterslides measuring 75 feet, 22 feet and 20 feet. <BR>Lifeguards are on duty each day, and a complete staff of pool attendants is available to provide complimentary towels and lounge chairs. If privacy is your pleasure, nineteen secluded cabanas are available for rent. There, you can socialize or relax with complimentary soft drinks, snacks, fruit, newspapers, rafts and even cable TV. <BR><BR>Also surrounding the pool in this tropical garden are The Paradise Cafe and The Dolphin Bar, where you can enjoy lunch or sip a cool drink under colorful umbrellas.<BR>

JBG-<BR>We had a similiar situation a couple years ago. For my bachlorette party almost exactly 3 years ago, myself and 7 friends were staying at Mandalay Bay, which we chose in part for its fabulous pool. <BR><BR>The weather was gorgeous, low 70s and sunny. Imagine our dissapointment when only one of their pools were open...a very small one, with hundreds of guests wandering around looking for a spot. The front desk said we were able to use the Luxor pool if we liked. No thanks!<BR><BR>The final insult...flying home I picked up the new Conde Nast Traveller, guess what was on the cover...&quot;The best hotel pool in America&quot; -yep, MB. Certainly no mention that most of the pools aren't open in the winter. I wonder if this is still the case?!<BR><BR>Reading your post, we should have been more vocal, I wish we could've been compensated in some way.<BR><BR>PS. All this being said, I still love Mandalay and will be back in May.<BR><BR>

The renovations are not major. They are resurfacing the pool and doing some work on the Paradise Cafe. The work is scheduled to be complete this month.

Wow. What controversy a couple of comments can generate.<BR><BR>Well, all is well here at Bellagio and we couldn't be happier. The weather is amazing and the pool is lovely. We are very happy with our choice and Patrick is right that a free room without a pool simply wasn't worth it for us this trip.<BR>Regardless, this gives anyone out there a chance to negotiate a better deal at Mirage by at least claiming the pool is a major issue.<BR><BR>Cheers all...<BR>

Yes, JBG, I think some of the posters failed to read your comment, &quot;my wife decided we wanted a pool at the hotel regardless&quot;. If that didn't make it clear that the cost of the room or its being free wasn't the issue, I'm not sure what would be.

For what it's worth, we almost booked a room at the Mirage for the pool also, but ended up getting such a good rate elsewhere that we couldn't pass up. However, imagine our surprise when we went to the Mirage to see the dolphins, and saw that the pool was closed. You are correct...I did my research, and no where was it mentioned that the pool would be closed for renovations until you got there. Pretty crappy IMO.

I will be staying at the Mirage next week. Does anyone know if the renovations have been completed?

I remembered looking for information about the Mirage pool before I went there in Feb and found a web site (unfortunately I don't remember the name) that had a notice about the renovations. I just did a google search and found another site that said the pool was closed until 4/4/03. (Looks like you're in luck Chico) <BR>I would email or call the hotel if you want to be absolutely certain.

Was just there yesterday, it was still closed unfortunately but it looks as though renovations are just about finished.

Got an email back from the Mirage. The pool is open, but not at full capacity (which I suppose means that not all areas are open). The new retail and restaurant areas are not open. They expect all work to be finished in &quot;early May.&quot;

We stayed at The Mirage last week - 4/9 - 4/13 and the pool was open!

Chico - Was the whole area open or just part of it? Was it nice? Going May4-7 and definitely need to know if the pool area is open - not a big deal to me, but my wife will NOT be happy if it's not open.<BR>Thanks,<BR>Ken

Ken,<BR>I can't say for sure that all the pool area is open, but everything we saw was open. It is a great pool area and well used.

Stayed at the Mirage on 4/16. Parts of the pool area were still closed. The open area was wall to wall sunbathers... hard to get a lounge chair.<BR><BR>

FYI:<BR>I just called the Mirage and the pool is 80% open, and will be at 100% on May 6th.

MANDALAY BAY POOL...OPEN!!<BR>

KinLA, even when the Mirage pool is fully open, it's hard to get a prime chair. This is a warning to anyone planning to sunbathe at Mirage -- get in line BEFORE the pool opens to ensure you find your ideal spot. I usually get in line 30-40 minutes before the pool opens, and there are ALWAYS people ahead of me. Last year I found out that the group at the front of the line (they were in front every day) got in line an hour and fifteen minutes before opening. It's a sight to see, but WORTH IT if you want a spot near the pool, in the sun, etc. etc.
