Minnesota/North Dakota in summer
We will be visiting Minnesota, Brainerd and north also possibly North Dakota this summer, need ideas of places to see. Have two kids 10 and 13. Will be by North Long Lake, for a week.

Depending on your interests, check these out in that area:

Lake Itasca State Park (walk across the Mississippi River at its official mouth)

Hibbing, birthplace of Greyhound Bus Co and Bob Dylan; also has a huge open pit iron mine.

Saint Cloud, home and museum of Charles Lindberg

Grand Rapids, birthplace and museum of Judy Garland

Fargo (no, not the murder site; the movie was total fiction) has the Roger Maris Museum in its shopping mall

I would request you NOT visit the museum in Alexandria with the Kensington Rune Stone; it's an obvious hoax and I resent people making money perpetuating an undeniable fraud.

The Brainerd lakes area is a big tourist destination for folks in MN. The big draw is fishing, golf and relaxing at a cabin on the lake. I would contact the Brainerd Chamber for info. Again, there are few major attractions, the key is relaxing. Let me know if you have any specific questions
If you are in the Fargo area, go south along the Red River to Ft. Abercrombie and visit the fort and museum. Your kids would probably enjoy that.
Be prepared for mosquitos anywhere along the river especially. Have a great time.

Minneapolis can be a fun city.

You can't forget Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox in Brainerd! Just a couple big statues, but the kids will like it.
|
I think the Paul Bunyan and Babe the blue ox are in Bemidji.
The Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids also has a Children's discovery center. |
International Peace Gardens in Northern North Dakota was very interesting and we were there before they did the spring planting, so summer should be beautiful! Looks like this year is their 75th Anniversary.

This thread is from 1998! I hope "Deb" had a greaat time! :)
However, here's a plug for Theo Roosevelt Nat'l Park in Medora, ND ~ part of Badlands Nat'l Park ~ and definitely worth visiting. |
Oops..hate when that happens! Wow...1998 and then revived in 2003 & 2007!
